Triple click not working to start or end guided access

I just bought a used iPad Air 2 to use as an assistive communication device for my son. However, I can't get the triple click to work to start or end guided access. I know that triple clicks in general are being recognized, because I can turn on an Accessibility Shortcut and it works just fine.

Is there some configuration I'm missing?
