expired certificate

Hello, I have had the attached message in Keychain for some time now.

Is it important?

HOw do I renew the certificate?

Also as a general enquiry, there does not seem to be a general explanation of terms like "public key", "application password" , "network password", "handoff encryption key" etc. There are thousands of "public keys" on my machine and I am tempted to delete them. Should I? Is there a general blurb on the net that explains the guts of keychain?

Hello Bob593251,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you have some expired certificates and would like to know if you can delete them without issue. In some cases you can delete the expired certificates without issue, but some may need to be renewed. This article has additional information about renewing certificates that you may find helpful:

Thanks Joseph, but the link was unintelligible to me. I have no idea what the origin of the certificate is , what it does and whether I need it. When I select 'delete' I get the message:

Warning! If a private key is deleted, certificates associated with that key can no longer be used. This may prevent you from reading encrypted messages or making secure connections. Proceed only if you are certain that you no longer need the selected key.

That does not encourage me to do anything.

Also, I can not find Profiles pane in System Preferences, I have checked everywhere and cannot find it, unless I am supposed to press the option key at the same time or some other secret Apple contortion. The only reference to Profile is in Network>802.1X.

can you provide some more advice.
