Iphone back up and restore

I tried to back up my phone, and it was unsuccessful. Then, I tried to restored my phone and it seems it didn't work either. Now my phone is frozen with an image on my phone screen: there is the iTunes icon and a vertical wire connector, with a white arrow directing up. I cannot turn off my phone, I cannot do anything with it, it is frozen. What could I do?
