How can I have the apple TV revert to my default slide show when it is idle mode.
If the Apple TV is not doing anything. I would like it to play my slide show or video, kind of like a screen saver.

You can have a screen saver with custom images.
How you do that, depends on your model Apple TV.
Either get images from Home Sharing or from iCloud, or possibly from a tvOS app that supports generating a screen saver compatible slide show.
