verification code boxes doesn't appear on my macbook air

I am trying to sync all my apple devices and i can't use them due to, that the verification code appears on the iphone it tells me to put it on the mac and the boxes don't pop up where to install that code. Why doesn't the verification code appear on the macbook air when it appears on the iPhone when trying to enter in iCloud / iMessage etc
