one year free apple + TV isn't free

I signed up for Apple + TV on my 3rd Gen ATV, which offered 1 year free and $6.99 there after.

I just noticed that I'm being charged $6.99 from the beginning.

So I cancelled it. So pay attention to those receipts sent from Apple.

You would be charged for the subscription exactly as described in the initial subscription confirmation email.

However, there could be a temporary authorization hold on your card, if you haven’t used that card with your Apple ID account before. This hold is not a fee.

should I wait

Wait for what exactly? You have the confirmation of signing up for this service and getting a subscription.

is this really free ???

Free for 1 year, yes. You will get monthly charges in one year, if you are still subscribed by that time. If you cancel during the trial period, the subscription will end immediately. If after one year, you decide not to continue, then you should cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date (pro tip: mark your electronic calendar with an alert for March 19, 2021).

$59.70

That is a lot, and you should be suspicious and verify. This would not be for Apple TV+, but for something else.

You would have claimed the offer on the iPad, via the TV app and that is where you would use the service. You can scroll down to Apple TV Channels section and select the Apple TV Plus icon to see all available content.

In order to use it on your TV you would need a streaming device (Apple TV 3rd gen or later , Roku, Firestick) or a Smart TV that supports the TV app

I just received an email for a free year of Apple TV given a new Apple purchase but the link just takes me to a free 7 day trial. Is there an email I can contact to get this offer to work?

You are advised to contact Apple Support to assist you with the redeeming of the offer. They may supply activation codes, after some verification.

A phone doesn't connect from Youtube. That is done using a wireless streaming protocol, most likely your TV has built in chromecast. That will not work for this. You would have to use Apple's airplay protocol, which requires an Apple TV (3rd gen or later), or compatible TV. Otherwise, you would use a streaming device or TV that supports the TV app (in which case you would stream directly). All compatible 3rd party devices are listed in the link I provided above.

As I previously stated, you have already claimed the offer on the iPad using the TV app. That app is where you use the service, scroll down to the Apple TV channels section and select the Apple TV Plus icon. You can also use it on your iPhone 8 plus, as long as it is up to date and signed in using the same Apple ID

The TV app will also give access to previously purchased movies, via the library section. It will offer them from the cloud, as long as they are still available in the store, as well as any titles downloaded to the device.
