Unable to re-enter gmail password

Hi, I’ve been having this lingering issue since I moved from iPhone 4s to the 6s plus. I am unable to use the default mail system that came attached with the phone. When ever I try I’ll be told to go to settings and re-enter my gmail password and there I always get “there’s no connection to the internet” but there’s connection. How do I solve this problem?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 13

It will still be on your gmail account.

Log into your gmail account on a web browser - and check your contacts after you delete your account of your phone.

I've done this hundreds of times and nothing is lost, once you add the account back, everything will sync back up again.
