Dead iPad Mini 1 - Recovering data

My iPad Mini 1 (well I'm pretty sure its a 1) has given up on me. It refuses to charge, I've accepted it, its a good 5 years old, Apple products are not known for their longevity. I've just got a new iPhone, restored my iCloud data only to find 20 photos, and a few notes are backed-up, out of around 1,000 pictures and other videos and files.

Obviously I don't want to lose all the pictures, so is there anyway I can recover the data from my iPad, without switching it on, and without iCloud? A friend told me there was a way using iTunes, but I can't remember exactly what he said.

Cheers (:

If the device will not power on, there's no way to get the data.
