iPhone could not be synced because the connection to the iPhone was lost

I am getting the above error when trying to sync between iTunes on both my ipad and iphone.

My itunes install is on a Win10 PC. I have been syncing over both cable and wifi for sometime and this error has only just started occurring (on both cable & wifi)

I have also noticed in in the device details (both devices) on itunes that the 'Back up Now' is greyed out and under 'Latest Backup' i see the message (on both devices) that it has never been backup up to this computer. I have checked and all previous backups are still present on the PC

I have version 12.10.4.2 of itunes, and IOS 13.3.1 on the ipad & iphone.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Windows, Windows 10
