Macbook Pro 16 inch speaker pulsating noise?

Hi everyone,

I purchased a MacBook Pro 16 inch back in December 2019 and - like most people- got issues with my speakers (popping, crackling, all that jazz).

BUT, there is also ANOTHER ISSUE that NO ONE seems to talk about and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

So I updated my Macbook to now macOS Catalina 10.15.3 and no more popping and crackling, great but there is that pulsating sound/distortion coming from the speakers (since I purchased it but I was told by Apple that I had to wait for the update to come since it was software related).

it's a weird echo sound coming from the speakers when I watch videos (online or downloaded), when I use Logic Pro/Dorico/Sibelius/Garage Band/Itunes/etc. It comes on and off randomly as well.

Does anyone else has that problem? As a musician is very frustrating, I don't know what to do.

Thank You

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

Thanks for the advice guys. I was just happy to get it working. I've now changed the Project settings to 48khz in Logic by going to File>Projects Settings>Audio

and changed the system settings by searching "Audio Midi Setup" in spotlight and choosing Window>show audio devices to bring up the settings for the speakers and have changed them to 48khz too.

The lowest I can get the buffer in Logic, without it going full "Rice Krispies" - snap crackle and pop on me is 64 though. I can confirm that the galloping sound has gone for me with those settings too. I'd be interested if anyone has got it down to 32 although I suspect at that level of latency it's more accurate than my actual playing :-)

Hello again all,

So... After various support calls to Apple, receipt of a new machine, escalation to 2nd line support etc, I have been informed that Apple engineering have acknowledged the problem and will address it in a software update. I'm assuming this will be an update to OS X as I have also been able to recreate the issue in QuickTime in the interim (and of course people are seeing the issue with Garage Band etc)

I have formally asked Apple for an email confirmation of the situation but been politely refused on the grounds that Apple doesn't send out this kind of information because it can find it's way onto the Internet and, I suppose, be presented in a certain context. To a degree I understand their position about this, however, given that users on this thread first started posting in February I have mixed feelings about just how long a solution will be in coming.

I explained to the technician that I now have a £2.4K machine that I can't use the external speakers on - in other words - this problem isn't an esoteric fault that only a handful of power users may stumble upon. It's pretty basic stuff and they need to get a move on and fix it.

My request for formal acknowledgement of the problem was made in order that I have a hard copy of documents at my disposal should I need to exerise my consumer rights over the coming 12 months in the event the issue is not resolved. On the basis that Apple won't formally provide this information I have requested via email, and am now in receipt of, the fixed address for Apple's lawyers in Europe. I will need to write a letter to them to explain the situation and have them confirm to me that my intention (as another poster here quite rightly suggested) is either for a full refund of money, or receipt of a brand new machine within the 12 month period from the initial purchase if, for whatever reason, they have not solved the problem.

In terms of Apple's 1st and 2nd line support department I can't fault them. They've been very helpful and quick to respond.

I guess I now have to purchase some external speakers. Not happy, but my hand is forced - at least for 12 months.

I'll post back here after the next update to OS X (10.15.7)?? with a report on whether or not the issue my side is resolved.

Apple employees do not Troll the forums looking for problems.

To be certain Apple knows this is a problem, call Apple Care (1-800-APL-CARE in the US) or use the Contact Support link at the top of every forum page. Do not let the first responders dismiss your case as "solved" unless it truly IS solved, or they have filed a Bug report to get it on record and get someone working on it.

For what it's worth, I wrote earlier that there is no solution, and that's not entirely true. If you install a fresh copy of the operating system and do not install GarageBand or Logic Pro (or maybe any DAW, I'm not sure entirely on that one) then it won't happen to you. So you have that out.

I use GarageBand regularly so that's not really an option for me, but it might be for folks that wanted to casually play around with a DAW and have now horked their computer's speakers.

It might help to raise it with Apple Tier 2 support. They’ll eventually file a ticket to engineering. If engineering sees enough tickets, that may raise the priority of this issue. I already have a ticket, but more will probably help.

You’ll probably need to jump thru trouble shooting hoops. Or you may be able to convince them to file a ticket immediately if you say that there are a bunch of people with this same problem on the forums. Good luck.

Hi guys, thanks for all the responses.

I've checked the legal section on the Apple website that relates to UK consumer law. Obviously Apple is a big global company so the law will no doubt differ from territory to territory but in the U.K., a consumer has 6 years to excercise their right to a refund or replacement of goods by the seller, "of defective goods or goods which do not conform with the contract of sale."

What I would say to anyone having this audio problem and still speaking to Apple please do refer to my case No: 101169148237 so that we might gather a bit more momentum to shift this, most basic of issues, to the top of the pile where it should be. I do think they're going to sort it but a little push from our side shouldn't do any harm.

Yeah, I'm also hearing this. And yes, it's mostly noticeable when I'm working with simple sounds, like a single instrument, in something like Ableton or Logic. Here's a video that captures the issue.

It seems like musicians are the ones that notice it most readily because we're working with sound, and know exactly what it *should* sound like. I'm guessing it's a software issue, so hopefully a fix will be forthcoming. You're clearly not alone.

Yes. (After HOURS on the phone with tech support) they have acknowledged it's a problem and are trying to fix it as a software update - but after working with a tech specialist, his conclusion was that it is probably hardware. I don't know - all I can say is that it is an issue with new and refurbished MBP 16 inches.

I am on my second replacement in 5 weeks (3 total) and they all have the same sound issue!

Here is mine (and thanks for describing it so accurately - speaker pulsating noise).

Hey there,

same thing with my third computer (one exchanged and one returned)

i noticed something strange : all the MacBooks pros in Apple store DON’T have this problem.

which leaves me thinking : do you guys have the 32gb ram or more ? Maybe it could come from here. I wasn’t able to reproduce the galloping sound at the Apple store.

and it’s awful and frustrating because now it got me thinking « what if it was a worldwide hardware problem with Personalized computers ? »

Got my MBP 16 around a week ago and am having this issue with FL Studio. In my case I didn't start noticing this issue until I connected bluetooth headphones for the first time. After I disconnected them and used the internal speakers again, I began to notice this sound. Could it possibly be related to this? Anyone else?
