as title says, just stuck on black screen, it gets stuck at 'waiting for
iphone' on iTunes restore. the phone sometimes displays the restore
thing with the laptop. on latest ios, any help or ideas on what it could
be hardware wise?

I'd like for you to confirm the steps here have been done:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If you can’t update or restore your device with recovery mode, or you can't use recovery mode because of broken buttons, contact Apple Support.
