iPhone has started making pocket calls

Hi,

My iPhone 8+ has started to make pocket calls this last two weeks.

  • I have require passcode/thumb immediately set. Always have.
  • I have Siri set to require manual activation. Have for a long time because it kept activating when I speak to people often enough to become a nuisance.
  • It's not ringing last call etc. Seems to be random from my favourite lists.
  • I'm usually by myself working during the day so not chatting to people when this happens.
  • Phone has been in my pocket for some time before it's done this.
  • I can confirm that this last one I had not put my hands in my pockets.
  • I am not wearing anything new. Same rotation of shorts I've had for a few months.
  • I am normally habitually turning my display off when I put my phone down. But it's possible I have not. But it's not immediately making calls.

Never seen it do this outside of my pocket. Shouldn't the ear proximity sensor be preventing this?

Thanks for your time, Cheers.

Thanks for the reply.

  1. It's not correlating to missed calls. Wallet is the only thing I have active while phone is locked.
  2. I have an AppleWatch always connected. And occasionally a pair of BlueTooth headphones but when they are and are not turned on and paired also doesn't correlate. Siri however is set to "ask Siri" on the watch, but not on the phone.

I suspect that I am touching the touch id sensor when I put the phone into my pocket sometimes, possibly the screen being on. Then some touch makes it through my shorts pockets from my leg. I'll test this in a sec. Anyway this seems most likely cause. But I am surprised that this can happen when the proximity sensor is effectively got close proximity to pocket. I know that it only activates during a call. It would help my situation if I had the choice to turn that on for always. My other alternative it to turn off the touch ID sensor which I really don't want to do.

Follow up --- I tested the touch through my shorts and yes I can cause erroneous actions through my pockets! Going to make a not to be extra careful about this. Also I was able to do stuff with my palm on the screen with the pocket material between the palm and display. Surprised by that.

Cheers,

Nothing wrong with your iPhone. There are plenty different materials that can interact with the touch screen. Ever heard of gloves you can use it wit the touch screen? The solution for you is to put something between the screen and your pocket. For instance put your iPhone into folio case. Or put the device into different pocket where nothing is interacting with the touch screen.

Hey osihara,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I understand your iPhone is making calls unexpectedly. I definitely understand wanting to get to the bottom of this behavior, and I'm happy to help.

Are you noticing that these calls are in response to a missed call? If so, try turning off "Return Missed Calls" in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode.

Another thing to check out is that your device isn't paired with any bluetooth accessories that may be causing this.

Thanks again, and have a great day!
