iOS13 Notes app - paste adds extra blank lines

This is a re-post, as the previous post did not receive an answer. I'm still looking to resolve this annoyance:

Q:

iOS13 Notes app - paste adds extra blank lines

I updated my iPhone 8 to iOS13 and things are generally fine. However, the Notes app has gained some weird new behavior. I have a list of text items in a Note with each on its own line. When I want to move an item to a different location in the Note, I will select the line of text by double tapping it and cutting and pasting it somewhere else in the same Note.

For some unknown reason, iOS13 is now adding unwanted blank lines above and below the item that I moved. Is this a bug that anyone else is seeing and Apple might fix, or is my iPhone somehow unique? The same thing is happening in Mail, but not in Pages or other apps.

A sample would be the following list:

apple

peach

orange

banana

If I cut and paste the word "peach" to rearrange the list, it will look like this:

apple

orange

peach

banana

Thanks!

This was only to show you quickly what is happening; pasted text appears between two empty lines.

I can reproduce behaviour op is having:

  1. Create new note: [Title] Test note; [Body] Apple, Peach, Orange, Banana (each fruit in new line)
  2. Double tap on Peach; tap "Cut" and remove blank line.
  3. Move cursor to the end of "Orange"; hit 'Return' to create empty line between 'Orange' and 'Banana'.
  4. Double tap on empty line; tap 'Paste'.

Expected result: Orange | Peach | Banana.

Actual result: Orange | blank line | Peach | blank line | Banana.

I guess I'm confused by that method. If I just want to cut and move peach, why am i copying it. And then if I move it back to the same location I just cut it from, it doesn't make sense. However, I will agree that under that scenario, it does put a space before and after peach, and it also adds a space between orange and banana. That behavior does not make sense to me either. Now it appears that I have double-space between each entry. My cut and paste is what I've taught as the normal method of doing it for years. I teach Office and a cut and paste is just that, not copy, cut, and paste. I'm not judging your method, just that my method did not create the extra lines, but when I do as you stated, it not only makes space around Peach, it adds another space after orange, and that wasn't selected to do anything!

Let me see if I understand your issue correctly. I just opened a new Note on my iPhone 11 Pro with iOS 13.3.1.

I type the same list that you show. I select and cut peach. When I do, it creates a space where it used to be. To place it between orange and banana, I put the cursor in front of Banana and paste it. Then I would need to hit enter to move banana from beside peach. Am I doing this the same way that you are? Maybe because I'm not using the checklist style of note? I'm trying to help, but it is not acting like you show.

I concur with you that this happens when copy pasting from notes. Here is what I found when copy pasting a paragraphs from the Notes App into Safari (Forums, Text boxes etc).

  1. Whenever there is a hard ENTER at the end of a sentence or a word then the pasting process adds another ENTER/RETURN.
  2. If you have a list of words (from your example) and you cut/paste to re-arrange then the extra ENTER does NOT happen. I conclude that this because the ENTER code is removed during the Cut process.

This phenomenon does NOT happen when I paste to MS WORD and does NOT happen when pasting in the Messages App.

Maybe this is a Safari only thing (I have not tested this in all possible apps). I have sent feedback to Apple..
