Early 20-13 Macbook Pro A1398 15" Retina Laptop - the mirroring options only show up when I have a HDMI cable hooked up to it. If I try to use the AirPlay display it doesn't show up and never finds the AppleTV I have. When HDMI is hooked up it will hook right up to the AppleTV no problem.
I also have an early 2013 Macbook Air A1466 and it does the same thing.

If So, Why is it Not Working?

Make sure that you have both wifi and Bluetooth on your mac, and connect to the same wifi as your Apple TV. make sure you set the Apple TV to be discoverable.
(Settings > AirPlay)

Well seeing as it will Airplay if a HDMI cable is hooked up I would say its compatible no?
This doesn't help me unfortunately. Once I unhook the HDMI cable AirPlay options disappear...
Yes, Bluetooth and WiFi both on. And AppleTV is discoverable because I can find it when I have a HDMI cable connected to the laptops
