replace dc-in board

Hi all,

I have a mbp that seems to need a new dc-in board. The magsafe-2 end was getting real hot, the ends were blackened and now the magnetic pull is reduced to just about nothing. I have 2 mbp and the magsafe 2 works just fine on the other one. With apple stores being shutdown, I was wondering if anyone attempted to replace the dc-in themselves. I'm a bit more comfortable with a desk-top with real connectors, but I'm a bit stuck at this point. I would take a backup first and then possibly attempt this. If the stores were open, I would certainly bring it in, but that is not an option right now. My second mbp is a work supplied unit and the troubled is my personal unit.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Welcome!

I've not attempted it because I found it is a major gut-job to access:

MagSafe DC board access

listed as "difficult."

The good news: It does not matter that Apple is closed. They would not do the work anyway because your MBP is too old† for them to work on. Find a qualified independent repair shop, but be ready for high labor costs due to the time it takes to access the card and reassemble.

Apple very recently changed this policy. Apple will now attempt to repair "Vintage" systems as long as parts are still available. Here is a direct quote from the article you linked:

Vintage products are those that have not been manufactured for more than 5 and less than 7 years ago. Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Apple TV vintage products continue to receive hardware service from Apple service providers, including Apple Retail Stores, subject to availability of inventory, or as required by law.

I ended up ordering the part since it was cheap. If apple can't fix it, I'll try to find a local repair shop and see if they want to use my part. I ended up using 2 rubber bands to hold the power cord in and it no longer gets hot. It was getting so hot at times I could not touch it. This is working for now so it buys me some time.

Thank You to all who replied.

The entire logic board has to come out to get to, this includes the display coming off— if you have never done it I would not recommend it— a lot much can go wrong.

Any local computer shop familiar with Macs can do it. I just had one done, a mid-2012 MBP 15" — picked it up today $110.00 bucks parts & labor. Standard 90 day warranty.
