Can't connect to iCloud using Safari

when I try to connect to icloud.com, before I get to the username & password, I get the message "Connection Error

iCloud encountered an error while trying to connect to the server"

I get black line across the top of the screen and some apple links across the bottom, so I'm partway in... but never get to the verification screens.

Firefox works fine (that's what I'm using now)

When I tried to log into the help section to make a posting, it tells me that Safari can't open the page because...... it can't establish a secure connection to the server idmsa.apple.com. (once again Firefox is fine).

I'm baffled.

Ideas?

Using Safari 13.0.5; OS 10.13.6

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

It may be Apple's servers or it may be something else. All we know for sure is that there is nothing you can do on your end to fix it.

(Had already worked around with Chrome, but just in case I *have* to use Safari for something.)
