Watch shuts down during exercise

My Watch series 2 sporadically shuts down during exercise. I can be swimming, walking, or biking. It will start tracking the exercise and then at some point later during the workout I’ll look down at my watch and it will be totally off, requiring me to turn it back on. Never shuts down at any other time. only when the exercise is running. I noticed this began after it updated to watchOS 6.1.3. I’ve reset it, erased it and reinstalled from backup without improvement. It’s not the battery because once it restarts it’ll be fine the rest of the day(s) until I workout again. The workout power saving mode has been on for years and has not been a problem in the past. I have very few other apps on the watch, too. Pretty basic set up.

Anyone have this occur, too? Bug? Does Apple know?

To me, it sounds like the most likely cause is battery degradation. As batteries get older, they sometimes no longer discharge in a graceful way. In a “normal” battery discharge, the battery voltage declines gradually as the battery is being discharged. When a Li ion batteries get older, they sometimes experience sudden, large, unexpected voltage drops during discharge, especially if the discharge rate is high. The watch electronics need a certain minimum voltage to operate properly. When there is a sudden, unpredictable drop in the battery voltage below the minimum level, the watch cannot react fast enough to handle it gracefully, provide warnings, etc. It just dies or attempts to reboot as many people have described. The various solutions that people have offered such as turning off WiFi, background apps, etc. are all actions that reduce the load on the battery, i.e. the discharge rate. Under low/normal load conditions, the battery voltage may behavior ok and decline gradually, but under the higher load conditions, the sudden voltage drop may occur. When the watch is in exercise mode, it is continuously active, and also measuring heart rate, both of which add a lot to the rate of battery discharge, thereby setting up the conditions for the voltage crash and the watch shutdown. You can employ the “workaround” strategies of reducing load by turning off WiFi, etc., but this is likely only a stopgap as the battery performance will continue to decline and, eventually, even the reduced load will be too much. My suggestion is that you consider having the battery replaced. I think Apple will do it for $79, or you can take it to a variety of repair shops. I suppose there are kits to do-it-yourself, but I don’t recommend it, especially if you care about the water resistance.

I have a Watch 2 that is experiencing this issue. Turning off WiFi has helped, so I will use it this way for awhile, especially since it is an old watch that I only use for exercising. (I have a newer one for other times.). But I think the battery’s days are numbered...

I see that some people have sent their watches into Apple, and Apple has returned them saying the diagnostics check out ok. But unless their diagnostics test the watch under high discharge conditions, they may not detect the problem. The rate of battery discharge and voltage decline under low load conditions may look ok in their diagnostic test, so they may think that the battery still has adequate life left.

Suebike101 makes a good point, there is no solution from Apple for this.

I've done some further testing, and I can get through a run with cellular and wi-fi turned off, just recording distance and listening to music. But that really is too much of a compromise, since the whole reason I bought it is because it has wireless. I think the problem may have something to do with the carrier settings on cellular but I'm not sure. Whenever my watch is away from wi-fi and iPhone, and has cellular on, problems start. When cellular is on, and these other stated conditions apply, it doesn't matter if wi-fi is on or off, it crashes every time. So that's why I think it's related to carrier settings. Apple needs to address it in this context. Does anyone know of a way to force the watch to update cellular carrier settings?

My Apple Watch (Series 2) has been doing this too, since about February. I suspect it has something to do with the heart rate sensor taking readings - even prior to February, I found that sometimes I would not be getting accurate readings during the workouts - if it stopped taking readings when my HR was low, the active calorie count will not be accurate. At times I actually went out of the workout app and into Heartrate, got the accurate reading, and then Workout updated with it. Friday I went for a 30 min walk, my Watch shut off, Sunday I did a 60 min walk, it was fine. Tonight it shut off around the 40 min mark... but when it powered on again, it kept all of the workout data and the timer was still running. Heartrate and pace could not be determined so it would not update any other metrics like distance or calories burned. The rest of the UI was completely frozen, and it turned off again a few minutes later.

A brief (less than 5 mins) charge seems to help? It seems to tell the Watch that it's no longer on my wrist and it snaps out of whatever hung cycle it was in.

This problem only seems to affect Apple's Workout app: I also use Freeletics on my watch and it is fine and nothing like this happens. (The worst that will happen is if I initiate a Freeletics workout on my phone, it fails to tell my watch until a couple of exercises in, and I don't get the heart rate tracking for the first minute or so. It's simply phone <--> watch communication lag.)

Either way, I'm really hoping to push off a Series 6 purchase until after this Christmas season.

I’ve had it shutdown while doing a weight workout in my bedroom, so mine is not GPS related. I did a bike ride today and it recorded the whole workout. I did Close the other apps that were open and, to save battery life, I went to theatre mode. I also used the theatre mode on a Saturday ride and, again, it recorded entire workout. Of course, now that I’ve written this, it’ll probably die during Pilates tomorrow. 😏 I have to remind myself that I’m fortunate to have this high tech on my wrist and that I still have the ability to work out.

I’ve just returned from a 4.32 mile walk. The app worked as it should. The open water swim app is recording gps function, heart rate, stroke type, and distance .38 km in 52 degree salt water then turns off. When I first got the watch the “genius bar” was unable to help me find out why it would not record open water swims (2-3mile open water races.). When I went on Apple support board I found out I was not alone on and found the fix: It has to do with privacy settings.

I heard that the “security updates” had to do with the implementation contract tracing. I am going to look into those settings.

I have not changed any settings on the watch; only the watch update.

I have been told by Apple Support: 1. When you set up the Watch as new, it will erase the data on the watch 2.When you restore from backup you also erase data on the watch.

After the watch quickly returned to me from AppleCare Service this month. They confirmed that the watch “now” meets Apple specs after doing complete diagnostics tests. They recommended I do 1 and 2. I did. The watch shut off after 4 minutes.

Turning off the WiFi on the phone and watch has provided the closest workout recording this week.

I am still in conversation with Apple Suport.

I don’t take my phone either SERIES 2. Nor did I when the app and watch were performing correctly . . . . In January and Feb. 2020. The Workout app problems began with March and April watch updates. My last workout was somewhat successful though the watch turned off as soon as I paused AFTE 18 minutes of continuous open water swimming. Everything recorded then shuts off. My quartz Timex recorded 42 minutes. Bottom line: if it matters to you, bring something else to record your work out.

I have received “Radio Silence” from Apple Support regarding this thread and any resolution.

I agree with other posters 1. Make sure WiFi is off on your phone (background apps may switch WiFi back ON). 2. Close all other apps on watch and turnoff WiFi on Watch.

I would like to know if others have “significant locations” off under Systems Services privacy? Doing my own Beta
