how did you reset the date as I dont have a date option under current mode

I've changed my date back to 2016 but now I'm getting:

"An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."

I'm also running into this problem upgrading an older imac to ElCap. How do I get to Terminal? I'm in Disk Utilities, and there is no Terminal in the menu.

Thank you! Turns out I was in the Recovery mode disk utility. Once I restarted (again) and went to disk utility in setup, I found it. El Capitan running smoothly now.

Connect your MBP to your router via cable.

Boot to your Recovery Drive ( Command + R ) click on Utilities in the menubar select Terminal and then change the date.

Make sure your WiFi is switched off, top right of the menubar.

Then choose Reinstall Mac OS X, from the main panel.

See what happens.

I’ve been having the same problem with an old iMac. I connected to the internet via WiFi and downloaded the OSX. I got the same error message and tried a million things all day with no luck. I too had seen the suggestion about turning the calendar back but it seemed to suggest that the certificates had subsequently been updated. After reading this thread I just tried changing the year to 2016 and restarting. It didn’t need to be connected to the internet at that point since OSX was already downloaded and IT WORKED! Hi I find if you enter while in terminal with wireless off and no ethernet connection

If you see this "sudo: ignoring time stamp from the future" it means you need to enter your password

Quit disk utilities and then in the menu bar you will now see utilities click that terminal will show
