After update from 10.15.3 to 10.15.4 external displays doesn't work via docking station

I have two macbooks pro (2017 and 2018). I installed update of MacOS Catalina today to 10.15.4 and my DisplayLink D6000 docking station doesn't work from this point. I installed beta drivers of display link from a customer, but it didn't help. So, the only option is to connect displays via the apple adapter and hdmi, which is weird because you need 2 for 2 external monitors.

I haven't tried macOS Big Sur yet, but the problem persists for me on macOS 10.15.5, and unfortunately none of the fine processes described in this thread has worked for me.

This morning when connecting the USB-C-cable to my 16" MacBook Pro, my 27" Apple Cinema Display unexpectedly (unfortunately) lit up and continued showing an image until the macOS login sequence was completed, after which the computer restarted after which my Cinema Display again didn't display an image.

The experience is documented in the following video: https://youtu.be/-6qV4y9tMFk. I started filming after the image, unexpectedly, appeared on the Cinema Display.

I described a similar experience in the following post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251211856?answerId=252789088022#252789088022.

I found a workaround, and I'm now able to use docking station charging my Mac and extend monitors to three

How is what I did:

  1. Disconnect all cables to docking station and power it off for one minute.
  2. Uninstall Displaylink driver on my Mac, and restart Mac per onscreen instruction.
  3. Power Off Mac, not restart.
  4. Wait for 30-sec, and start the Mac.
  5. Download and install Displaylink driver 5.21 from https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/file?id=1478, and restart Mac per onscreen instruction.
  6. Power on Mac. Login Mac.
  7. Connect monitor and power cables to docking station.
  8. Connect Thunderbolt cable from docking station to Mac.

In my case I don't have the original power brick, I lost it a long time ago.

Instead I have 2 ways to charge my MBP:

  • Hyper Juice 80W model (stop work after 10.15.4 update);
    1. USB-C to USB-C PD protocol have a 60W out, and my MBP don't recognise at all the connection. But works in other devices including a MB 2019 with macOS 10.15.3.
    2. USB-A to USB-C with 20W out, still works.

  • Xiaomi Mi USB-C Charger 65W (still work after 10.15.4 update);

All solutions up-to-this point are

  • reset PRAM
  • reset SMC
  • Buy new Thunderbolt to monitor connectors
  • Install new driver or re-install old drivers (if any, none on my MBP)
  • or revert back to 10.15.3 (that's what I had to do).

I read that Apple changed the display system, so eGPU's now work as they should, looks like that fix introduced a bug. Lets wait and see: Apple probably knows about this bug, so now we have to wait.

Hi,

Is there anyone who uses the external monitor after updating to Catalina 10.15.4 with a similar setup, without any problem?

My setup is:

  • MacBook pro 16 inch model
  • 4k(3840x2160) 60hz monitor with a display port 1.2 via DP to USB-c (or Thunderbolt3) adapter

If anyone can use 16 inch model with DP external monitor, could you tell me which adapter you use?

(Interestingly, my Dell monitor (UP2414Q) works if I limit the bandwidth to DP 1.1 in the monitor's menu.)

Thank you

Hi, Thanks.

I think MacBookPro 16'' model has no luck here. What I've done so far includes:

  • Reset SMC
  • Reset NVRAM
  • Try other USB ports
  • Remove display settings

None of these worked for my Mac. I'm using UP2414Q(4k 60hz) via DP to USBc adapter. Isn't there any 16'' MacBookPro user who uses the external monitor via DP 1.2 or upper? Which model do you use?

Thank you.

MBP 16" and Dell P2720DC problems started after installing 10.15.4. Three symptoms so far:

  • When waking up the computer from sleep with Dell hooked up with USB-C cable, the login screen opens but the computer freezes completely (A beachball cursor totally stuck) and needs a power button restart to recvover. This happens every time, not occasionally.
  • Also the original Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter does not work anymore with the Display connected to through adapter via USB-C. No image anymore with this setup.
  • One time the computer suddenly froze completely and shut itself down and failed to start. The battery had drained from 100% to 0% after the freeze and plugging it to power adapter it was able to startup and begin recharging.

I could live with the Apple adapter not working until we get the fix, but the sleep and wakeup not working is really annoying.

Anyone else experiencing similar problems while waking the computer up with external USB-C display?

I've tried to do all resets (NVRAM, PRAM, SVC) but nothing works.

Just wanted to update everyone here and hope it helps. I was finally able to get my monitor to work and NOTHING else managed to work, this seems so random and ridiculous that you would never think to try.

After I connected my 4k MST DisplayPort monitor it was still just black and I had read people had success with just leaving it connected then coming back after a while and it worked, but I never intentionally tried. I was trying different things to get it to show up, but nothing, so I went to the other room and then came back like 20 min later, the display still connected and my MBP was sleeping, so I turned it on and logged in from screen lock and BAM 60hz all working perfect, picture shows and everything.

So I was able to reproduce this and its working 100% of the time so far. If you restart or shutdown it stops working again so you have to let it sit. Also want to note that for me the monitor showed up in OS X as the correct display connected but no picture.

  1. Plug-in monitor cable.
  2. Make sure OS X registers that a monitor has been connected by checking in Displays Pref, if the "arrangement" tab is there it's connected. Alternatively you can check "About this Mac" then click the Display tab to see if more than one monitor is connected.
  3. Make sure "Turn display off after" is not set to NEVER in energy prefs, mine is set to the default 10 min on power adapter.
  4. Let the computer sleep the display and go to screen lock.
  5. Turn on the MBP and login.
  6. Monitor should have picture now.

After you get picture, I was able to close the lid and go into clamshell mode, the a bit later opened up the lid and get dual displays. So the only thing that breaks it is restart or shutdown.

This was tested with 10.15.5 beta 3, but I don't see why it won't work in 10.15.2, 3, 4 honestly cause the same behavior of the monitor being connected but no picture was the same on all those versions for me.

Hope this helps someone, cause I know I've been so frustrated and going crazy trying to fix this issue over the last few weeks and after having spent $4600 on this 16" MacBook Pro I was furious. By the way I'm still waiting for the "Engineers" to get back to me through the Senior Apple Care advisor with a solution or an answer after 10 days...

Best of luck!

I did the following and has no issue since upgrading to 10.15.5:

  1. Unplug the connection to docking station
  2. Uninstall DisplayLink driver or DisplayLink Manager, depending on which version of driver you installed earlier
  3. Reboot Mac
  4. Download & install the latest displaylink driver for Mac, version 5.2.4 released on 5/26/2020, at https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/macos
  5. You will be asked to grant something like recording screen access to the driver during the installation, grant it.
  6. You will be asked to reboot, do it.
  7. Plug your docking station back.

It's been 4 days and I no longer see the issue.

Hello, after over a month of trial and error, here is what works for me and saves me a lot of time.

My setup: MacBook Pro 16 inch, Sharp 32-inch 4K LCD monitor (bought in 2014), USB-C to DisplayPort cable (any brand is OK).

  1. Before connecting the monitor, open System Preferences and change "Turn display off after" to "1 min". Also (this is very important), uncheck "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off". You need the computer to go to sleep as soon as possible.
  2. Connecting the external monitor, the display on your MacBook Pro should have some change indicating the external monitor is recognized by the computer. For example, all the files on the MacBook desktop will disappear because they are now on the external monitor, even thought the external monitor is still not active right now.
  3. Wait for the computer to go to sleep in about 2 minutes. To make sure the computer is indeed sleeping, you can connect an external drive that has a LED indicator. When the LED on the external drive is off, the computer is surely sleeping.
  4. Wake up the computer, the external monitor should be active.
  5. Open System Preferences and change "Turn display off after" to "Never". You can setup a "Screen Savor" to protect your monitors.
  6. In my case, if I don't shut down or restart my computer or turn off the power of the external monitor, the external monitor works perfectly without the need to repeat Step1-5. But sometime without any reason, the connection is broken again, and Step 1-5 should be repeated.

Hope this is useful. It's still annoying but waiting for 2 minutes to get the external monitor working is OK for me.

One last item for you Dell D6000 users; there are apparently no drivers for Macs, see attached. Though you may have been lucky that these worked with Macs initially, it doesn't appear Dell ever supported their use with Macs. I am not surprised. It hardly makes sense to complain to Apple. Call Dell and ask them if they plan to fix the problem, or if they even can.

The supplemental update didn't solve my problem, and sometimes my MBP 13 mid 2017 don't wake up from sleep with the closed lid (connected with a keyboard+mouse+power), I just can ear the fan working and sound of successful login (automatically over the Apple Watch 3), but no imagine in my external monitor, I'm using a USB-C to DisplayPort in a ASUS PB278, and this is my cable:

THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION: but if I remove and connect the cable several times, or even reboot the macOS, worked fine.

Never happen before the update for 10.15.4, so another nail in the coffin.

After update from 10.15.3 to 10.15.4 external displays doesn't work via docking station
