Can't update payment method

I have a message that there was a problem with my icloud storage payment. Don't understand why at all!!! I am told to update my payment details. I have tried over and over but nothing will happen. Apple sends me a verification code, I put it in, but then nothing happens beyond that. I have tried to update on my phone and on my laptop. Please help!
