When preparing Macbook for trade in, I go into Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD - Data "Delete" and the "-" sign and the "Erase" button are all greyed out and unavailable. I am logged in as the admin

Hold CMD+r keys as soon as you see light on the screen.
I shut down and then hit CMD R Power buttons to restart and when it restarted same thing
Am I to hit CMD R at a different point in the process?
