I have not yet succeeded in getting my Apple Pro XDR display to update its firmware, but I do have some additional information. At the suggestion of folks on the Macrumors Forum I reset the SMC of my Mac Pro by unplugging the power supply for over one minute and then plugging it back in. I also followed the procedure and reset the NVRAM on my Mac Pro. Neither of these procedures caused the new firmware to be made available on my Pro XDR display. With the Mac Pro running and the display operating, I unplugged the power cable from the back of the Pro XDR display as well as the Thunderbolt cable. I waited about 45 seconds and then plugged back in the Thunderbolt cable and power cable. The display came to life but I was not offered the firmware upgrade. At this point I am fresh out of any ideas for getting my Apple Pro XDR display to update to the new firmware. If anyone from Apple happens to be reading this I would hope that they will step in with some suggestions.
Have you tried it with the display plugged into one of the Thunderbolt ports on the computer, not the graphics card? Maybe the update process would work better without having to go through the graphics card.
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I plugged the Thunderbolt cable from the Pro XDR display into one of the two Thunderbolt ports on the Apple I/O card in the Mac Pro and tried to get the display to update its firmware, but I was never offered the chance for that to occur.
This afternoon as a result of posting on this forum the problem of my Apple Pro XDR display not updating to the new firmware (2.2.2) an Apple Support Agent reached out to me by phone. She carefully took down everything that I had done, collected a variety of system reports including one specific to the Pro XDR display, and promised to escalate the case to a Senior Support Specialist. She also ask me to click on the Apple>About this Mac>Software Update>Advanced and check Install System Data Files and Security Updates (which had not been checked).
Tonight I sat down to do some image editing in Lightroom. I woke my Mac Pro from sleep and tried to connect to my NAS server where all of my image files are saved. I found that I could not connect to the NAS. This has happened occasionally in the past and I have always solved it by restarting the Mac Pro and then connecting to the NAS. However, before I could restart the Mac Pro I had a fleeting glimpse of a message in the top right of the Pro XDR display that disappeared before I could read it. When I restarted the Mac Pro the display remained dark and did not turn on. After over 1 minute of waiting, I did a power button forced reboot of the Mac Pro. The Mac Pro booted and the display was very slow (ca. 1 minute) to turn on, but when it did appear all seemed normal. I went to Apple > About This Mac>System Report>Graphics/Display and saw that my display was now on firmware version 2.2.2 so somehow during all of this the firmware update had finally been accomplished. And, yes, I could readily connect to my NAS after this reboot.
I would suggest checking Install System Data Files and Security Updates as described above to anyone having a problem getting their Pro XDR display to update its firmware.

Same thing happened to me this morning. Turned on the Mac Pro and nothing appeared on the screen for over 3-4 minutes. Did a forced reboot and looks like everything works again. Might be due to the firmware being changed on the display.
I am having he same exact problem, and I have taken the same steps the tyou have taken. No update has occurred.
