It's 110% an iOS 13.4 issue affecting iPhone 7. There is a video out there that showed this issue even in the beta (https://www.reddit.com/r/iOSBeta/comments/f0yrtp/bug_cant_watch_browser_video_on_134_beta_7_plus/).

Furthermore, it's broken on all browsers, not just safari. It doesn't work on chrome or firefox either. Doesn't work even if you request the desktop website.

I downgraded my phone to 13.3.1 and the video returns and works perfectly. Upgraded back to 13.4 on a clean install and the browser video breaks again. Not related to wifi, or poor connection, or anything else. I've tried restarting, erasing all settings, restoring the phone etc etc.

Absolutely infuriating bug, especially seeing as that it was present in the beta which was released over a month ago. Plenty of time to fix this nonsense issue. No reason for this to be happening. Bad oversight by the software development team. Guess this is how they force upgrades on consumers...

Yes, spent about 2 hours on the phone with a support rep and then a senior support rep. We tried many things, including running remote diagnostics on my phone. Their last suggestion was to wipe my phone and do a clean install. I said no (other people have tried that to no avail). I have a case# and email the senior support rep every few days PLEADING for a fix to what is obviously a broken software update. Will continue to do that. I encourage everybody to call them.

Hello, everyone including big brother Apple. I’ve made several posts to this thread and have an update for my phone.

My iPhone 7 Plus was purchased directly from an Apple Store on 12/24/16 and has always been in an Otterbox defender case from day one. My phone early this year was experiencing low call volume and was hard to hear people and for them to hear me. When I updated to IOS 13.4 the microphones all stopped working completely. I could now not hear anything during a call and the speakerphone would not work. Also, voice memos were dead, the video recorder stopped working, the WiFi icon would be greyed out for awhile after a restart. Watching videos from Safari also went black with only audio. I restored twice and briefly I got a call the first time and then everything went back to not working. A few weeks ago Safari videos started playing again without the black screen, no idea what I did if anything.

If you have the microphone issues like I had this is an audio IC chip problem. Our phones have a design flaw that enables a slight flexing to occur with the case, which stresses a logic board inside that has the audio IC chip on it. Over time this chip becomes disconnected and your microphones stop working with the WiFi issues and eventually your phone will get stuck booting up (loop disease).

A few days ago I took my phone to a repair shop and had them fix the audio IC. My microphones work now, but it cost me $139 and tax for the fix. Finding someone local in Washington state was also a problem as micro soldering is required. After the repair strangely I lost Safari videos again to the black screen. The technician has done hundreds of these audio IC repairs and noted that this problem was a new one not in relation. We tried everything and eventually a restore fixed the video problem. The technician researched this and he believes it is an IOS 13.4 flaw, which I agree with. IOS 13.4 seemed to cause my phones audio IC problem to get worse and then the Safari video playback issue. IOS 13.41 fixed nothing for me. If your phone has the microphone issues surgery to the audio IC may be the only real fix. An update could possibly change the way the flawed audio IC works restoring some functions. A Bluetooth device such as AirPods or a third party equivalent could help you make and take calls. HC Browser works playing videos such as YouTube, but be cautioned Privacy and Security are probably at risk with this Chinese based web browser. Sorry for the long post, I hope it helps someone. Apple really dropped the ball on this and needs to address our phone’s design flaw and IOS malfunctions. Just terrible we have to go through this.

I have the exact same issue. After the new update, I haven’t been able to watch any videos on safari. I cleared my data, turned my phone off and on and I even tried resetting it but nothing has worked. It’s just a black screen , and I can hear the audio but cannot see the videos.

i also have issues with phone calls. I cannot make or receive any calls anymore and if I do, they cannot hear me and I can’t hear them either !

How can I downgrade from the new update to the previous one? That might help

its good that next update will fix the playback issues but the calls/mics are all audio ic chip problem, some guy tried to fix his audio ic chip to a repair shop and lo and behold he can make calls now and the some....and cost him 100-150usd Cheaper than apple have(300usd) cant remember if it also fixed the wifi disable for 2-3 mins after reboot issue.

Hi everybody?

I'm dealing with the same problems as yours:

  • calls you cant hear And cant hear them back
  • making a calls audio option is grayed out and speaker
  • go to your voice memo app and try recording and if it doesnt work yeah, sometimes your hear a noise in the mic.
  • wifi is disable for exactly 3-4 mins then its working after that
  • No video playback on safari, only sound.

This problem appear and disappear randomly.

Are you sure the is a Audio IC chip problem? It's so strange that after few day after upgraded to 13.4 and 13.4.1 start to fail.

I've make a reset, but nothing happend, the I've make a factory reset, but all problem still randomly.

What can I do? I need to go to a service or is a software problem?

Regards

Today's ios update did fix video playback. It does nothing for the other issues many of us iPhone 7 users are experiencing (greyed out speaker, no mic, no sound on phone calls, wifi doesn't work for first 4 minutes after restart). I called Apple to explain my issue they said "sorry that's hardware (your chip flexed out of the board his how he put it), it's absolutely not fixable by apple, requires micro-soldering that is rarely successful and the best we can do is trade yours in plus $319 for another iphone 7 that will have no warranty" (the new SE is darn near that price so why in the world would I do that?) I explained that there are literally a thousand iphone 7s on this community page and one other that have had this problem in the last 45 days and they all started with an ios update. He assured me that the ios update did not cause the problems, but could possibly exacerbate an existing problem. Personally, I got 3 years out of the phone and will probably get another Apple phone, but I 100% believe that they knowingly or unknowingly junked my phone through updates. I hope that this problem gets brought up to the right people and if it takes a media firestorm like the old battery controversy, I hope they have to pay for it in the end. I'll be setting my iphone7 in a drawer and hoping to cash it in for something when this blows up on them.
