Mail video attachments say downloading but don't download

I often get video and photo attachments that I cannot open. All of them say "downloading…" in small blue letters below the attachment icon. But they never actually download. Can anyone suggest what the problem is?

Hello Kenneth Cohen1,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to download attachments in the Mail app on your Mac. To help isolate this, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log in to your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Graphics performance limited in macOS Recovery, safe mode, or Guest User mode

Cheers!

I've now confirmed this: when I deactivate the rule that was redirecting some of my email to a specific folder, newly sent videos and jpg's attached to those emails downloaded correctly and I can view them. Those emails now appear in my inbox because the rule redirecting them is deactivated.

As a workaround, the rule might be fixed by inserting an Applescript script that delays moving the email until the video has first downloaded, but I don't have the programming skills to implement that

That's exactly what is happening on my Mac. I'm part of a group discussion in which members sometimes send short videos attached to their emails. A Mail rule I have directs all of these emails to a separate mail box I have just for the group. It looks like those are the emails which don't "finish downloading" the video attachments. I've noticed that this also happens with some jpg attachments.

I'll try deactivating that rule to see if it makes a difference. It make take a few days to see the results. If deactivating the rule fixes the problem, then there might be a bug in Mail or something related to it, or I might have a pref file or something similar that's corrupt.

This happens to me often and I think I have narrowed it down a bit. In the mail app I have set up a number of folders on my computer for various organizations I belong to. When incoming mail is received I have set up rules to route the message to the mail box folders on my iMac. It seems to me if the incoming mail has an attachment it never downloads but is stuck on downloading. Is this similar to what you are doing?

Regards
