Screen Time App - Parent Account

Hello everyone,

I have had some good usage experience with the screen time parental control functions, on both my kid's MacOS (Macbook air) and iOS (iphone).

a). On the iOS, i have been able to successfully restrict any apps purchase and installation without the permission from the parent account.

b. However on the MacOS, while downloading and installation of programs/apps via App Store is managed by the restriction parameters set under screen time, I seem to be unable to prevent/control any form of download and installation of programs via websites, for example, chrome browser via google.com.

Question: Does anyone have any successful experience with b) ? Suggestion welcome :)

Thank you.

Hey there BeeHT,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you’d like to know if there is a way to prevent the downloading of apps that are not available in the App Store. I’ll be happy to help.

Though I don’t see a way to do this using parental controls, there are some options for checking which websites they’ve been visiting on their Mac using Safari here:

Set up Screen Time for a child on Mac

Also, a number of apps from the web are from unidentified developers. You may want to check the Security and Privacy Preferences on your Mac here to make sure it’s not enabled. You can read more about this in the following articles:

Open a Mac app from an unidentified developer

Change Security & Privacy General preferences on Mac

I hope this helps.
