Screen Time App Limits keep disappearing

Why does this screen time and app limits functionality not work? The ones I set are over-written, even tho I have block app turned on, half of the time they disappear and I have to restart the list. What is going on?

Hello,

The only fix that worked for me was:

  • Update all devices to latest OS: 17.0.2 (as I write this response)
  • Turn off ScreenTime on all devices
  • Turn on ScreenTime again
  • IMPORTANT: Make sure you don't enable "Content & Privacy". This is the key setting.

After these operations the time limit remained active. Of course, you might need Content & Privacy settings as well but this is the only thing that kept the App Limits in place.

Hope it works for you too!

Robert

Same issue on multiple devices. Seems the app limits all disappear if the one more minute feature is used. This has been happening since iOS 16, and has persisted through 16.2.

I’ve tried disabling it entirely and set it up again and again. Along with adding the app limits back. Each time they use the One More Minute option, boom the app limits are gone.

Since iOS 16.5 i don't have the problem anymore.

That's what i've done:

  • I've placed all devices from my family on the table and updated them to the latest iOS, iPadOS and macOS
  • Deleted all app limits, so that it looked like default
  • Changed the device names to unique names (settings -> general -> info)
  • restarted all devices
  • reconfigured app limits at one device, waited around 10 minutes and checked if they were correctly transferred to the other devices

Since ive done these steps the app limits are working perfect.

Interesting. I opened a service ticket with apple yesterday and talked to an Apple Support Agent. I was told the screen time settings are always stored in the Family Organizer Roles iCloud Account.

In my case, thats my wife. So I deactivated everything screen time with her account on her device for the kids and configured everything from scratch. Seems to work, but after a couple of minutes, settings are lost again.

So it seems like, if its true what the Apple Agent said, that there is a problem to store the settings permanentely in the family organizer screen time settings and therefore the config is not available on the kids devices.

Will try the one minute more option though. Thanks for the tip!

I have to add my backing to this as well: APPLE! Please get this sorted!!

App limits disappear after a day or so. And of course, our kids don’t come and tell us!

And Apple have locked their iOS down so much that we can’t even rely on a good 3rd party option.

Come on!!!

I read somewhere that one workaround that kids use is to delete apps, and then re-download them from the App Store. This has the side effect of getting rid of app limits.

To keep them from doing this, use Screen Time to lock down their phones further so that they can't delete apps, or install new ones, without your approval.

I had this problem and I think I’ve possibly found the cause.

i had an older iMac with outdated OS X that could not officially be upgraded but it was in daily use and active.

first I upgraded all iPhones in the family to latest iOS but the problem persisted.

but when I found the opencore legacy patcher and was able to upgrade my older iMac - now screen time seems more stable and the app limits have not disappeared in 3 days..

App limits have been working for my two kids for over a month. I have determined that problems arise when the parent accesses screentime settings. Before clicking on the child’s screen time profile you must wait for the “updated” time stamp to update to current. Once you wait for the progress indicator to stop spinning and update to current, you can click on the child’s profile. Ironically it seems to me that the more the parent checks the limits the more often they go away. I swear that for my two kids the limits haven’t disappeared for over a month. I know because i get ask for more time requests and i very periodically check but wait for the progress indicator to stop spinning and the time stamp to update. Is this the way it should work? Of course not. But this is a workaround it seems to me to allow it to work while they try to fix it.
