Iphone 11 Pro, Mail app draining the battery in background.

If anyone has had this problem, I have found a solution, my mail app was running constantly in the background and draining the battery, e.g. from 100% to 20% overnight. I have been in contact with apple support who were very helpful but did not solve the issue, I believe its a problem with ios 13.xx, I have 13.4 Anyway, I tried everything even turned off all my mail accounts, turned off fetch, turned on low power mode, none of this worked. I did a hard reset and restore with no success. I eventually deleted the mail app and downloaded outlook for ios from the app store, I have set up my mail accounts again on this and it has cured the problem. (no more battery drain)

It seems there is a bug which is affecting the Iphone 11 pro, because I also have an Iphone SE with ios 13.4 installed which is not affected, I would still prefer to use the original mail app but will wait for the next ios update to try again.

The same for me, my battery on my iPhone 11 Pro worked brilliantly and then suddenly it was draining at a rate of 40% an hour!!! Looking at the battery in settings and there was 1 minute and 18 hours background on the email app! I tried everything , deleting the app, reboot etc and it still continued. Finally I deleted the app again and did a reset all settings and perfect! I now have a loss of 30% battery in 24 hours...exactly as it was before. Don't bother rebooting etc, go straight to reset and delete the app. I’m now using Gmail app till Apple sort out this problem as I do like the email app they have .

Thanks to Jono2000 for the advice, it works a treat!

Update> sooooo frustrating , now the mail app is draining in the background even though I’ve deleted it.....20 hours in the background and my battery down to 3% overnight from 100%, so sick of this and totally fed up. I’m using Gmail and I honestly thought that once the mail app was deleted it seemed to solve the problem , it did for 24 hours and now it’s back. Any more ideas....Jono2000?

As a follow up, my battery stopped draining for 24 hours after deleting the mail app. It has now started draining quickly again, I have checked the battery app and noticed that 95% of the battery drain has been caused by recently deleted apps in the background. The only app which I have recently deleted is the Mail app. has anyone had these issues. its very annoying with a new iphone 11 pro when your battery dies overnight from 100% to 20% with no use.

I have been talking to apple support but so far, have no solution.

Another update, after spending some more time with Apple support they have diagnosed my phone and found no hardware issues. I was advised to restore my phone and set it up as a new phone via iTunes. After doing this it was fine, no battery drain for several hours. But suddenly mail app starts running constantly in background again. I disabled all my mail accounts. Disabled mail in icloud, disabled push and set fetch to manual. Still mail app is running in background. Battery going down by 20% in a few hours with no phone use. If I switch the phone off. Leave for 5 mins and switch back on it temporarily clears the problem. It re occurs after a few hours. This is clearly a software issue with IOS 13.4 and the iPhone 11 Pro. There are 2 other iPhones in my household. An iPhone 7 and an SE, both these are not having the same issues.

I'm having the same issues with a new iPhone 7. Battery drains rapidly and goes from 100% to 40% overnight. Apple Support are trying to help and we have reinstalled the latest update for iOS, deleting the reinstalling the mail app and even switching off one of my three mail accounts. All still to no avail. Apple Support are going to look at it again tomorrow. There seems to be some sort of bug somewhere. My phone also gets hot when charging and hot when in use. I'll report back if we get any further over the next couple of days.

I had the same problem with my new iPhone 7. After numerous calls with Apple Support who really tried to help I think we have found a solution. My phone was draining quickly and it showed the Mail app using most of the battery power. We did try a normal restore and that didn't work. I therefore cleared the phone down to restore but selected Manual Restore. This meant entering the mail accounts in separately. Apple thought there was an issue with the backup which was causing the phone to work extra hard. I am now trying to figure out how to get my apps transferred. I've added some individually but a couple do have data on them. Anyone any ideas on that?

However, it does seemed to have worked. Phone was draining from 100% to 40% overnight previously. Last night only dropped from 84% to 77%.

Thats good, but you should keep an eye on it because this happened to me even after deleting the mail app, recently deleted apps were draining battery in background. I have now updated to IOS 13.4.1 and the calendar app is now draining battery in background overnight. switching the phone off and on again seems to relieve the problem for a couple of days until it re appears. It seems that a lot of people are having the same problem, it is clearly a software issue with the IOS. lets hope it gets fixed in the next update. also, my wife's iPhone 7 is getting very hot while using it and the Siri app is draining the battery from full to 20% overnight which is strange because Siri is turned off and she does not use it.

I was dealing with this issue for so long. Tried everything. The only thing that helped was to delete native mail app (which was still running in the background even when deleted) and restore phone, then restore data and never download native mail app again. As I figured out yesterday, there's a huge flaw in iOS and when your phone's acting like this, you are probably target of hackers. Apple is testing new version which will repair this flaw. But still huuuuuge problem.

I have the same issue. I did delete all my emails and the mail app but it still has not helped. I am using outlook app now. When I look at the battery usage it always says recently deleted app is (still) running in the background. Somehow even after its deleted its still doing it. I have hard reset and everything else. Dang!

I’m sure any android you get will be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. But explain that to my colleagues who constantly complain about the poor battery life of the android phones; most of them have switched to iPhones. But I’m sure you will not have the problems that they have.

The mail app drains the battery if you have mail set to Fetch or Push, because it will then download mail in background. Whether or not it is enabled in background app refresh. If you change all of your email accounts to fetch it will just as much energy, but it won’t do it in background.

But the simplest solution is to plug in the phone overnight, every night.
