Iphone 11 Pro, Mail app draining the battery in background.

If anyone has had this problem, I have found a solution, my mail app was running constantly in the background and draining the battery, e.g. from 100% to 20% overnight. I have been in contact with apple support who were very helpful but did not solve the issue, I believe its a problem with ios 13.xx, I have 13.4 Anyway, I tried everything even turned off all my mail accounts, turned off fetch, turned on low power mode, none of this worked. I did a hard reset and restore with no success. I eventually deleted the mail app and downloaded outlook for ios from the app store, I have set up my mail accounts again on this and it has cured the problem. (no more battery drain)

It seems there is a bug which is affecting the Iphone 11 pro, because I also have an Iphone SE with ios 13.4 installed which is not affected, I would still prefer to use the original mail app but will wait for the next ios update to try again.

Yes, perhaps there are dozens or even hundreds of phones out of hundreds of millions. But it’s still a problem with those specific phones, not a general problem with iOS. When there are general system problems there are tens of thousands of posts and headlines in all of the technical news media. And some prudent troubleshooting should fix it. For example, what happens when you install the mail app and don’t add any mail accounts to it? And then add just one account? And add more accounts, but one at a time, separated by days?

Problems with a mail app are usually the result of corrupt data in the mail server inbox that the phone app tries over and over to resolve, but unsuccessfully.

yes I did think that maybes 3 mail accounts was too many, it shouldn’t be but you never know do you so I did try just adding one and then leaving some time but that didn’t work either. I honestly think I’ve exhausted all ideas. I re downloaded it yesterday onto my iPad and it’s working great which suits me as we’re on lockdown and I’m using my iPad way more than my iPhone.

I agree in that it’s probably something on the phone rather that iOS because as you so rightly pointed out there’d be millions wouldn’t there. Oh well Gmail it is on my phone......bleurgh !

I have 8 email accounts on my phone, 7 using the built-in email app, and a gmail account using the gmail app. 2 of my accounts are MS Exchange, the rest are IMAP. 3 of them (the 2 Exchange and an iCloud) support and are set to Push, the rest to 15 minute Fetch. I get around 100 messages a day. I have no battery problems on the phone at all. I charge overnight, and by the next evening my state of charge is still over 70% most days. iPhone XR, iOS 13.5, but I’ve had no problems with earlier versions, either. Neither does my wife with an iPhone 8, but only 3 email accounts.

i only have the 3 gmail accounts set to fetch 30 mins, wow you have a lot! I have an iPhone 11 Pro which I upgraded in January. At first I had no problems at all, using only about 25% battery a day and charging at night . I’ve had the same mail accounts for years and on my other iPhone I never had a problem. This problem seems to be only on the iPhone 11 Pro apparently, I haven’t seen it on any other phone.

thanks for your thoughts, hopefully in a couple of weeks I’ll find the energy to start all over again!

Hello! I have been looking around on the internet but don't quite see anthing "factory manual reset" related. How do you perform the manual factory reset? Maybe you can copy/paste a link or something? I have never heard of the thing that you can selectively choose which apple apps to include and which not. Would be pretty nice to solve this problem, i have had it since updating to 13.3.1 or something

Yes. I had exactly the same issue with my iPhone 11 Pro and also solved it by deleting mail and installing outlook. But have another issue with Siri draining my battery. I turned Siri off and Scrolled down and turned Siri off for each individual app. But when I installed Outlook I didn’t realize that the Siri was turned on for it. After having outlook installed for about a week with no issues my battery suddenly drained again. When I looked at the battery report Siri used 65% of battery. So I went and turned Siri off for outlook. I sure hope this solves my issue. There is definitely a bug in the software. I sure hope Apple will solve soon. I can’t believe that I cannot use Apple mail or Siri because of this bug.

Hi, you have to reset all the phone, general, reset, reset all settings, then choose a manual reset after that. It’s an absolute pain but it’s the only way I’ve found to download all your apps EXCEPT the mail app. If you chose automatic download then the mail app will automatically appear again. Since I did that I’ve had no more trouble, but I do miss the app. I’m using gmail now but it’s not the same. I’m hoping that Apple will fix this but as someone pointed out it needs to be a general issue and from what I can see it’s only a couple of thousand of us that have this problem. I hope this helps you.

For those interested, I just upgraded my phone to IOS 13.6 and it DIDN'T fix the problem. I have deleted my mail accounts and re-added, to no avail. I am not as ambitious as others and don't plan to reset and rebuild my phone, so will patiently (or unpatiently) wait for an Apple fix. I am following this post, so if anyone finds the silver bullet, please post for the rest of us.
