MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

Thank you all for the support and suggestions/work arounds.

For my MacBook Pro, turning off the Power Nap feature on ONLY the Power Adapter setting has worked for me so far. I can leave that feature on when using the Battery.

As a side note, the latest supplemental update for 10.15.4 does NOT fix this issue yet. I have tried the BETA and can confirm they are working on fixing this bug because I did not experience a kernel panic when using it.

Now that said, I do NOT recommend the beta version. When we use betas, we run into beta bugs. There are quite a few that would annoy anyone using it which is why I've reverted back to 10.15.4.

So here's to hoping Apple can push 10.15.5 soon without any new bugs. <----- I know that's probably impossible but here's to hoping right?!

I recently bought a brand-new MBP 16' too and I experienced several crashes each day even though I had update it to the lastest version of MacOS. I am also very disappointed about Apple's software quality.

What helped was the following:

  • Reset System Management Controllers (SMC) according to the instructions given here (sorry, just the German link; please look for the corresponding English version)

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201295

  • Additionally I reset the NVRAM or PRAM even though I don't really know if was necessary:

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT204063

  • Additionally I turned off power nap in the energy control.

I did all steps after the latest update of MacOS.

Since then no more crashes.

Let uns know if this help for you too.

Stay healthy!

Maybe a good clue?

@ClassicII , last night I deleted Google Drive File Stream (GDFS), left all of my 3rd party peripherals attached, left power nap disabled (battery and when plugged in) and......

My machine did NOT crash for first time in a about 10 days.

Now, you might say "you changed two variables so you can't say which one was the fix." However, I had power nap disabled the previous night with GDFS installed and it crashed. The diagnostic report attributed the crash to PowerPoint, but all I can say is that with power nap disabled in both cases and taking no other steps, my machine crashed with GDFS installed and it did NOT crash when it was deleted from my machine.

Not sure if this helps at all. Just wanted to share this. I'll try again tonight with GFDS not installed and power nap enabled just to get one more data point.

Good luck everyone!

16" MBP 2,3ghz 16gb ram and the 1 TB HDD.

I asked him to leave his machine plugged in to the power supply overnight then to close his lid, all while "powernap on power supply" was enabled. This morning when he opened the lid he had no issues where I have had issues with my custom built machine and the same situation.

Granted after turning off powernap on mine, both on battery and power supply the issue has been gone. but nevertheless I find it extremely rediculous that you buy an almost €5000 machine that out of box has these issues.

Off topic I also every ones in while notice a sharp shift in screen color. This is related to the auto adjust of the screen intensity. both on the 16" and the 13"

I am definitely experiencing the same issue, after a call with support almost a week ago, the support technician told me that this shouldn’t be happening, and suggested that this may be an issue with the hardware. Given that my MacBook Pro 16” is relatively new, it is still covered under a specific warranty, and I can take it in to get serviced.

However, after reading the error log, I am convinced that this is NOT a hardware issue, as for one, I haven’t experienced any of these issues before the macOS Catalina 10.15.4 Update.

For now, I suggest a band-aid fix of simply disabling the ability for your computer to sleep, seeing that the computer going to sleep is what triggers the issue to begin with.

So far, I’ve had no issues, but I do hope that the engineering teams at Apple catch wind of this and fix this soon.

Same exact problem. It was so bad on my brand new 16" machine that after being past around on a support call, I asked that they send me a new one, same specs (2.4G 8-core i9, 64G 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro and Intel UHD GFX cards). I received it, returned the original... and it does the exact same thing. I disabled the power nap and will next disable automatic graphics switching if that doesn't work, but they need to fix the software. Over $4k for a dysfunctional computer is not good business.
