MBP 16" 2019 CRASHES WHILE SLEEPING

ANYONE else having a problem with their MacBook Pro going to sleep then crashing? EVERY single day for 4 days now this prompt comes up that says "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." I Purchased a fully loaded 16" MacBook Pro January 2020. A $5000.00 Computer. I have had NOTHING but issue since. The report begins with panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8004a91b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x1fbc0. After searching I see 582 people have this same problem...REALLY APPLE? Suggestions were made to others who called apple support and they reinstalled their entire systems, reinstalled this, reinstalled that...I don't know about anyone else but I don't have time for all of that nonsense ESPECIALLY after spending $5k on a computer. Finally I found where a person requested the logic board to be replaced and the issue stopped. If Apple can't get their quality assurance in check I will be spending my money elsewhere. I want this computer replaced.

I also ended up having my 16 inch 2019 MacBook Pro sent in to Apple under AppleCare to fix the problem. Same things replaced on mine as on others who have reported: Logic Board and TouchID Boards both replaced. It was a pretty quick process taking only about 3-4 days (despite a warning of possibly taking 2 weeks.)

Everything working fine at this point.

If you have the same computer (regardless of specs as this is a problem independent of that) I would recommend sending your computer in before any AppleCare coverage runs out.

I think I fixed this. I was able to narrow this down to being an issue that only happened when I left my computer plugged into my OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock for power and the system was allowed to go to sleep. When I switched to the regular apple power cable, the computer was able to sleep both short periods and long periods and wake up perfectly.

Up until this moment, nothing I did had fixed the problem, but now it works perfectly.

Hope this helps!

I’ve had my 16” 2019 MacBook Pro back from Apple for 1 week now and so far so good. No crashes. That’s about the longest I’ve gone without a crash so I think the problem is fixed. They replaced my logic board and T2 board. This pretty much confirms that it is a hardware problem with some of the units, not a software bug. I would recommend sending in your laptop for repair if you’re having the issue.

Update: After talking with a support agent via chat, they instructed me to send the computer in. They said it was likely a hardware issue. I mailed it to them (they have a super process for returns btw) and just received it back yesterday. The report says they repaired the logic board and the finger print board.

To test it, I am leaving it on, simply closing lid when not working, opening lid when am working & plugging / unplugging from monitor as you normally would. Normal stuff that prior to me sending it to them, would eventually leave the computer unable to resume after sleep at some point. I have done this with my 2015 MBP with same OS installed for the week that the 16" was away and have had 0 issues. SO, in theory, this should not happen anymore on this computer. If it does...well...we have found ourselves a series of 16" lemons.

To lhp1995 point about "I found out that WindowServer is responsible for my situation, do you guys get the same problem?

Command: WindowServer

Path: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SkyLight.framework/Versions/A/Resources/WindowServer" perhaps this is what it is.

I will see how it goes over the next few days. Hopefully it will not hang after a sleep/hibernation and that will be that.

Will keep you posted.

This will hopefully be my last post in this thread.

Recap: I finally got around to reporting the constant freezing / inability to wake from sleep to Apple a few weeks ago. They made me run a few tests and concluded it was a hardware issue.

Sent in my computer and received it back a week later. The slip inside said they change the logic board and the Touch ID strip. Since then, I have turned off the computer zero times, restarted three and had no issues with it waking from sleep. It is silent and playing nicely with all apps installed.

I feel strongly that many of you that have the MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB like I do likely have a logic board that is no good. IF you have any guarantee...rush to get the computer repaired before your warranty expires.

Best of luck and I hope to not have to post here for my woes but would gladly help anyone with a similar situation for theirs.

Cheers.

I would also like to add further comment to this. I have had the same issue. I got sick of it and finally opened a ticket with Apple. Laptop went in for repair a week ago. I was notified by Apple repair tech's 2 days ago that my MBP, 16" I9, 32GB, 2TB needs a replacement of the logic board and the Touch ID strip. Thankfully it's still under 1-year warranty because I did not purchase Apple Care. I should have it back later this week.

I asked if this was a common issue and the tech said No but it's not unheard of.

So for others out there with this ceaseless problem, it looks like a hardware issue after all.

I recommend you do not hesitate with such issues like I did. If I had reported this within 90 days, I could have just gotten it swapped out and got a new laptop.

Will post back once I have used the laptop for a few days.

OK just wanted to provide a final update.

Since I've had the computer back, I've had no computer crashes, waking from sleep.

They replaced the logic board and the Touch ID strip. Apparently, that was the issue.

Had it not been under warranty I think repair costs would not have made sense. The tech commented that it's almost the cost of the entire laptop! I'm guessing because the CPU, RAM, and hard drive are all part of the logic board, but I'm not 100% sure.

If you're experiencing this issue and you're under warranty, don't delay to get it fixed.

I had this problem with my 2019 MacBook Pro. Overnight, everynight, left plugged. Next morning: crash and sometimes a blue/grey screen. I couldn't find the problem. Did all the restarts, holding down keys, resetting PRAM and VRAMs or whatever.

I even got Apple to take it in and run tests while it was underwarranty. They couldn't repeat the problem. And then I realised something:

I'd been powering the MacBook via a Satechi USB-C dongle. They weren't using one of those in the MacStore, which is why it wasn't crashing. Since powering the Mac directly from the USB-C NOT via the Satechi Dongle, I've not had this problem.

This probably won't fix the problem for everyone. But it might help some.

Yup, disabling Power nap worked for me too.

I've been having crashes for the past 2 months or so. Tried all other solutions (3 different calls with support and many hours diagnosing), but turning off power nap is the only thing that worked.

So to everyone who is new here with this problem, try this first, before you waste hours on re-installs etc.

Now let's hope Apple fixes this real quick.

I don't consider some of the workarounds mentioned in this thread to be a fix, but more of a workaround. I did have success with the following:

I was having "Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change" problems and found a fix that has made my computer more stable so far...

First what I tried before I tried this:

  1. PRAM Reset
  2. SMC Reset
  3. Recover Mode Disk Utility Repair
  4. Recovery Mode Re-Install of OSX

Finally went into recovery mode and used Disk Utility to completely erase HD (not just reinstall OS). Reinstalled OS X. Startup as a new computer fresh out of the box. Used time machine to install backup of Apps and Data. Had a bunch of permissions and iCloud keychain problems, so this final step may not be necessary - Created new Admin user to use as my new personal account. Migrated all important files and data into that account. Removed my old user account (kept old account folder for backup). So far computer has not restarted (a few days now-before it was happening multiple times a day).

It’s the external monitor connected through a thunderbolt hub, like for my Benq.

It’s a week that before going to bed, I disconnect the external and put it to sleep with no problems. When the external is connected, 100% crash.

Using the external as a second monitor (not as the only one) I even solved a big problem of performance: I do not get anymore that 1300% cpu occupied by kernel_task with no apparent reason.

Anyhow... Catalina 10.15.5 is quite buggy... hope the 15.6 will solve...

Jul 29, 2020 5:10 AM in response to acuraintegralove

So far 10.15.6 has fixed the issue for me.

2019 16” MBP

2.3 GHz 8 core i9

16GB RAM

5500M 4GB

Connected to Razer Core with a PowerColor 5700 XT Red Devil

My issue WAS that every time I would lock the computer and walk away - literally every time - I would come back to a kernel panic and a restart. Sometimes it only took 5 minutes, sometimes it took a few hours to happen (I know because it would reset the RGB on my keyboard when it finally happened). I tried everything. I prevented the Mac from going to sleep, messed with all of the energy saving settings... nothing.

This patch fixed that. I have been able to put the Mac to sleep, walk away for a day or two, come back and it wakes up, turns both monitors on and chugs on without issues.

Not sure if this helps anyone, but I've seen discrepancies whether or not the recent updates resolve anything for anyone. Anecdotally I can confirm that while on 10.15.6 I still have the issue of crashing when sleeping when I have "power nap" enabled. Once I disable it, sleeping/closing the lid is fine and I have no issues. It's been documented in this thread that power nap is a factor and I can confirm on my 16" 2019 Macbook Pro this is my experience.

So for now, it's probably best to disable power nap on both battery and while plugged into an adapter.

Jan 6, 2021 8:03 AM in response to christopherfrommontreal

My previous fix I posted in this forum stopped working. :(

Updating to BigSur did not help the issue either.

I too am taking the laptop for repair on Saturday after speaking with Apple yesterday. This is likely a hardware issue. I got the idea that it could be the T2 chip or logic board or both from my call.

I do not have supplemental Apple Care, but the unit is within the 1 year warranty period.

I started having this issue almost immediately after my purchase of MBP 16". After speaking with Apple rep, he said you could have just returned the unit for a replacement within 90 days. That's what I should have done.

He said repairs are going pretty fast so they shouldn't need it for too long.

My advice to anyone with this issue: you should do all the Apple expected handling things BEFORE calling, such as (resetting NVRAM, PRAM and SMC, booting into safe mode and testing it there too, AND also performing a clean install of MAC OS. Unfortunately, they seem to require you to do a clean re-install to ensure nothing is corrupt in MAC OS. They also required me to upgrade to BigSur too to see if that would handle it. If you do all this before you call them, your handling with support will be faster.

I'll post back once I have more info
