MBP 16" 2019 CRASHES WHILE SLEEPING

ANYONE else having a problem with their MacBook Pro going to sleep then crashing? EVERY single day for 4 days now this prompt comes up that says "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." I Purchased a fully loaded 16" MacBook Pro January 2020. A $5000.00 Computer. I have had NOTHING but issue since. The report begins with panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8004a91b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x1fbc0. After searching I see 582 people have this same problem...REALLY APPLE? Suggestions were made to others who called apple support and they reinstalled their entire systems, reinstalled this, reinstalled that...I don't know about anyone else but I don't have time for all of that nonsense ESPECIALLY after spending $5k on a computer. Finally I found where a person requested the logic board to be replaced and the issue stopped. If Apple can't get their quality assurance in check I will be spending my money elsewhere. I want this computer replaced.

I can sure it s not caused by USB-C, I tried without any peripheral hub ( only using batteries, turn off bluetooth ). The crash happen in 2 cases:

  1. Using Sleep function
  2. Fold the screen

100% crash.

Terrrible

I bring it to local apple services, they say it caused by batteries was damaged, they suggest to change batteries with 500 USD

Terrrible Price!!!!

My lap is 2017 macbook Pro

Have any one have same problems ?

yes, Try resetting the  SMC  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Yes, I have the same model and am having the exact same problem with exactly the same crash report message.

I've tried all the usual crashing advice (e.g. SMC reset, reinstall OS) and it's had no effect, this MBP 16" is still crashing on a regular basis after closing the lid.

This issue only seems to have started for me after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.4. My guess would be that it's a software issue in the latest update rather than an issue with your specific machine.

I am having this problem, too. Brand new MBP 16", fresh install, deliberately didn't migrate from my 7 year old 15" MBP, but this is happening all the time...

But it does spend most of its time connected to external monitors. I'll start leaving it undocked and see it it happens again.

Edit: This answer in another thread says turning off power nap will prevent the crash. That's less than optimal but has anyone else tried it?

I don't consider some of the workarounds mentioned in this thread to be a fix, but more of a workaround. I did have success with the following:

I was having "Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change" problems and found a fix that has made my computer more stable so far...

First what I tried before I tried this:

  1. PRAM Reset
  2. SMC Reset
  3. Recover Mode Disk Utility Repair
  4. Recovery Mode Re-Install of OSX

Finally went into recovery mode and used Disk Utility to completely erase HD (not just reinstall OS). Reinstalled OS X. Startup as a new computer fresh out of the box. Used time machine to install backup of Apps and Data. Had a bunch of permissions and iCloud keychain problems, so this final step may not be necessary - Created new Admin user to use as my new personal account. Migrated all important files and data into that account. Removed my old user account (kept old account folder for backup). So far computer has not restarted (a few days now-before it was happening multiple times a day).

Reposting because this fixed the issue for me on my 2017 MBP.

I was having crash/restart "Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change" problems and found a fix that has made my computer operate as expected:

Completely erase HD using Disk Utility (Make sure you have a Time Machine backup). Reinstall OS X. Startup as a new computer fresh out of the box. When prompted, use Time Machine to install backup of Apps and User Data.

What didn't work:

  1. PRAM Reset
  2. SMC Reset
  3. Recover Mode Disk Utility Repair
  4. Recovery Mode Re-Install of OSX without HD erase

I've tried almost everything and still crashing...

Latest two tries, yet to make:

  • Not using ONLY the external monitor, but both internal (opened) and external
  • Using a DIRECT thunderbolt3-to-HDMI cable to connect to the external monitor (currently, with my BENQ 27" TB3 docking station I pass through an TB3-to-HUB-to-(monitor_out+power_in+USB3_hub).

In any case it is a SOFTWARE/OS problem, 'cos before Catalina 10.15.4 I had not similar issues at all. And maybe it's even in some ways related to my kernel_task going up to 1300% cpu usage with no apparent reason...

I'll keep you posted, should I address this...

Anyhow... Apple... please Apple... this is an expensive machine... and so many professionals use external monitors...

Yes, my Benq monitor has a docking station that, with a single tb3 cable manages:

  • Hdmi out
  • power in
  • usb3 host for 4 usb devices.

Initially I used the 27” as my single big monitor (crash prob + performance prob), with my MBP closed, below the monitor.

Now I’ve bought a nice stand to keep my MBP16 high and open, and therefore using the 27” as a second screen.

To ease the fact that if I want to put my MBP in standby I must detach the tb3 cable, I’ve bought a magsafe-like connector (10Gbps/100W certified) for comfort and to avoid usb-c mechanical issues.

And it seems I’ve solved the kernel_task performance problem: it happened 3-4 times per day, with no apparent reason, now zero (over one week). I only suffer some problems with a Logitech Brio 4k webcam that sometimes works perfectly, sometimes becomes veery sluggish (from 60fps to 0.2fps...), either via usb3 host or directly connected to the mac (while the internal webcam works always ok). Probably Catalina has a serious problem with USB drivers...

I had the same issue for a a couple months with my macbook 16 before finally deciding to take it to apple. The issue seems to be caused by the T2 chip/ overheating (Especially when using GPU intensive applications). Got the T2 chip replaced and started controlling/ boosting the fan speed to maximum and charging on the right side instead of left (there's an earlier thread regarding charging the mac on the left causing overheating).

Been running flawlessly for 2 weeks now, issues disappeared so far,

Initial issues includes

  • unable to wake from sleep mode
  • crashing while running/ waking up from sleep mode
  • unable to boot up
  • unable to switch graphics/ crash while trying to
  • crashing when switching from power cord to battery
  • crashing after prolonged use of graphics intensive apps

Hope this helps

I don't know why this thread is marked as solved, when it clearly is not. My system has been having this issue since I bought my MacBook Pro 16" in May 2020. It has been intermittent and have gone a while at times without the issue surfacing. However, it has gotten much worse in the last week or so and has been crashing every day or two, and sometimes twice a day. I hesitate to let the thing sleep anymore. I have a whole range of errors on restart:

  • Hibernate Restore Error
  • GPU Panic: mux-regs
  • Sleep Wake failure in EFI

I've had this problem both with Power Nap and without. Apple support had me to reset the SMC and the PRAM and NVRAM. And they said to re-install the OS. Seems like not of that works. Will install Big Sur once it's available. This problem is intermittent so might take a while to know if it's fixed with Big Sur. I think Apple might have a hardware problem, but crossing fingers an OS upgrade will fix it.

I think I have finally solved this issue after having it for months. I have pretty much the same laptop as you.

I used to get the crash from sleep every time the laptop went into a longer duration sleep. Every morning or after a long lunch = CRASH. Bad look for $3,500 machine, especially since I'm a new Mac user coming from Windows where crashes have been virtually non-existent for years. I was thoroughly unimpressed and frustrated with Apple.

Resetting the SMC, NVRAM and tinkering with sleep/wake times and even reinstalling the OS, only gave temporary relief but the issue came right back.

Here's what I did which DID finally work:

  • System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced > Disable all of the options (remove all checkboxes)
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Disable WAKE FOR WIFI access
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Disable POWER NAP
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Disable PREVENT computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off.

I have not yet had the time to go back and systematically enable one at a time to see where it breaks. I'm just gleeful right now about having a $3500 laptop that doesn't crash every. single. day.

The turning point in the FIX was disabling the Bluetooth and wifi wake options. The others (PowerNap, Prevent Sleep when display...) were already disabled and did not fix it.

My unproven theory about why this happens?

I think while the computer is in a deeper sleep, it's listening for nearby Bluetooth devices. If it detects one, maybe it tries to wake, but because of an OS bug, it can NOT wake itself from this deeper sleep, so it crashes). This is all conjecture but it's definitely something having to do with waking from sleep.

If these settings work for you too, another test to further isolate the issue is to revert the above settings BUT try disabling both wifi and Bluetooth before you put your laptop to sleep, to see if that also resolves the issue. But it might not because it might just be a bug in the OS.

Hope this helps others resolve this ANNOYING issue!

I had this issue constantly on a new 2019 MBP 16 (2.4Ghz 8-core i9; 32GB RAM; AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB; Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB) after adjusting the power settings, I haven't had a single crash.

I've attached screenshots of my Energy Saver prefs, as this seems to have worked for me... I was super frustrated, so maybe this will help until Apple gets around to fixing the issue. Good luck.
