MBP 16" 2019 CRASHES WHILE SLEEPING

ANYONE else having a problem with their MacBook Pro going to sleep then crashing? EVERY single day for 4 days now this prompt comes up that says "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." I Purchased a fully loaded 16" MacBook Pro January 2020. A $5000.00 Computer. I have had NOTHING but issue since. The report begins with panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8004a91b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x1fbc0. After searching I see 582 people have this same problem...REALLY APPLE? Suggestions were made to others who called apple support and they reinstalled their entire systems, reinstalled this, reinstalled that...I don't know about anyone else but I don't have time for all of that nonsense ESPECIALLY after spending $5k on a computer. Finally I found where a person requested the logic board to be replaced and the issue stopped. If Apple can't get their quality assurance in check I will be spending my money elsewhere. I want this computer replaced.

I also ended up having my 16 inch 2019 MacBook Pro sent in to Apple under AppleCare to fix the problem. Same things replaced on mine as on others who have reported: Logic Board and TouchID Boards both replaced. It was a pretty quick process taking only about 3-4 days (despite a warning of possibly taking 2 weeks.)

Everything working fine at this point.

If you have the same computer (regardless of specs as this is a problem independent of that) I would recommend sending your computer in before any AppleCare coverage runs out.

It does seems to be an issue but let me tell you what I did. In system preferences under Energy Saver I turned OFF the Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter. I left the first 3 items checked .

1)Prevent Computer from sleeping....

2)Put hard disks to sleep when possible...

3)wake for WiFi access...

mall of the above are checked and the last one, the 4th one is unchecked (off)

4) Enable Power Nap....

I read somewhere someone suggested that this worked. Keeps the computer from crashing. The most recent update helped AND doing this. Hope it helps you.

Same model here, MBP 16" i9, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, 5500 4GB, Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287).

Brand new, same issue. I performed a clean install rather than backing up from time machine. Same story.

To me worked disabling power nap (in the plugged in tab - energy savings).

Looks to me that this is a software issue, but I'm still worried, just updated from a late 2012 mbp 13" which worked seamlessly.

3300€ for a pro machine shouldn't be like that.

Not really sure if give the machine back.

Same exact issue with my base model 16". Installing 10.15.6 made it much much worse for me - it would crash after entering my password. Booting into safe mode was the only way I could access the machine. Tried reinstalling MacOS, resetting PRAM and SMC, disabling all apps that launched on boot - nothing worked. I googled around quite a bit and saw a few posts from people with the same issue who said installing the Big Sur public beta resolved it so in desperation I took the chance. Happy to say 24 hours later not a single crash. My Macbook wakes up normally and runs great. I wouldn't normally recommend installing a beta OS on a primary computer but in this case it made mine useable again after months of frustration.

I had the same issue for a a couple months with my macbook 16 before finally deciding to take it to apple. The issue seems to be caused by the T2 chip/ overheating (Especially when using GPU intensive applications). Got the T2 chip replaced and started controlling/ boosting the fan speed to maximum and charging on the right side instead of left (there's an earlier thread regarding charging the mac on the left causing overheating).

Been running flawlessly for 2 weeks now, issues disappeared so far,

Initial issues includes

  • unable to wake from sleep mode
  • crashing while running/ waking up from sleep mode
  • unable to boot up
  • unable to switch graphics/ crash while trying to
  • crashing when switching from power cord to battery
  • crashing after prolonged use of graphics intensive apps

I am now waiting for a return box from Apple to have it shipped back to them for repair.

The support rep I spoke with via chat told me that the logic board needed to be changed. I asked clearly if it is possible that they only re-install the OS, the support representative said no.

So, with that said, I am pretty confident that they will fix the issue. Will keep everyone posted with the story of the Mac I own. I would recommend anyone having this issue simply get in contact with Apple if your machine is still under warranty.

I am curious, do you also have a problem with Touch ID? My touche ID Will Not work properly since the last update. I tell you, Apple needs to read these posts!! So many, including you and me, having the crashing...going through all of the wasted time and energy with customer service trying time get brand spanking new computers to work properly and then to find out turning power nap off fixes it. This shouldn’t be.
