Mac Mini crashing on sleep

After the recent security release for Mojave my Mac Mini (2018) crashes when it goes to sleep. Every time I have to restart it and Finder reports that my Mac crashed. I have an eGPU which has been working like a champ to date... but curious if other people are seeing this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I haven’t read this whole thread, but it seems, these are the issues that are also discussed in this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251244094?page=1

I’d like to sum up the results, we had collected so far:

  • Troubles began with the installation of the Security Update 2020-002 and Safari 13.1
  • Affected hardware: Mac mini 2018, iMac Pro and recent Mac Book Pro (hardware with Apple’s T2 Security Chip).
  • Affected OS: High Sierra, Mojave, partly Catalina

Possible issues:

  • no power supply on at least 1 Thunderbolt port (i.e. Mac mini ’18: TB-Bus 1, port next to HDMI)
  • Kernel Panic through sleep or shut down commands, related to BridgeOS
  • macOS crash when disconnecting an eGPU by the Disconnect command in the top bar eGPU menu
  • some experience seemingly random restarts of their Macs with upcoming BridgeOS Kernel Panic Reports afterwards

The Security Update installed a Firmware Update for the T2 chip. This seems the reason, why the actual problems cannot be fixed by a re-installation of macOS: the new T2 firmware (build: 17P4263), located in a protected memory area of the T2 chip itself, will not be replaced with an older version during a fresh macOS installation.

The T2 chip holds the SMC, which is related to sleep and shut down.

The Security Update 2020-002 also installed changes to IOThunderboltFamily and Kernel, which might be the cause for the troubles with eGPU and failing power supply on 1 TB port.

Found solutions so far:

  • To avoid the sleep and shut down BridgeOS Kernel Panics, it seems that not using (not even launching) Safari 13.1 is a reliable workaround. This new Safari version seems to trigger a bug which results in the aforementioned problems. Using a different browser, such as Firefox or Chrome does not trigger the bug.
  • Failing power supply for TB port can be restored by a SMC reset (some had also success with NVRAM/PRAM reset).
  • No solutions were found so far for the macOS crash while using the Disconnect command for an eGPU. Disconnecting without macOS crash can only be done when Mac is shut down.

We have send in lots of Kernel Panic Report and bug reports (via Apple Product Feedback).

So far nobody got any response by Apple. We’re actually waiting for a fix with upcoming updates, as this is clearly a software problem.

Expected solution:

Apple must release bug fixed versions of BridgeOS and Safari for High Sierra, Mojave and probably Catalina. (Catalina users encounter some other issues since the SecUpd that need to be addressed).

I now noticed that in addition to using Safari, syncing Photos.app library to an iPad via iTunes also seems to sometimes trigger those sleep/shutdown-reboot crashes in Mojave.

I now use Chrome instead Safari so I don't get the crashes (unless some other family member has used Safari in their account). But during the last few days I am sure Safari has not been used but I have done some iTunes sync sessions (another saga about Apple's current software quality...). I don't yet know what exact workflow is needed there to trigger the crash.

I have an external disk to test Catalina and with moderate use I don't get the crashes there.

Tried slow mode, I mean safe mode. It took all of 15 seconds after going to sleep, to shut itself off.

Stupid question maybe, but is there a way for me to boot the Mac Mini from, say, my 2015 Macbook Pro hard drive instead of starting “clean”? The MBP has no problems running an almost identical system with almost the same software. If that works fine on the Mini, I say it's software. If it doesn't, it's hardware. Either way, it saves me from finding an empty disk, reformatting it, installing an OS, etc., ...

No. The install probably included the update but I can reboot later and check.

There are only three possible culprits:

* The monitor

* The keyboard and mouse

* The hardware, in case I'm up **** creek unless Apple chooses to be kind, after I go through an hour or two of phone troubleshooting, and then wait for

At this point, I think I'd just go back to my Mac Pro 5,1 - which I never did sell, though I meant to - and see if there's some hack that lets me run Mojave on an encrypted drive. Not being able to do that is the main reason I “upgraded” to this tiny little computer. Alternatively, if Apple only says “Catalina,” I might have to painfully choose between all my existing software on Windows (I do have Windows versions of Office and Adobe CS) and the Mac. It's an inevitable choice, really, because I have no intention of paying Adobe $20/month and Microsoft $10/month for stuff I already own; but it‘s one I’d rather not make for at least another year.

Hello Hessel89,

oh, that doesn't sound good.

Personally, I don't participate on the Beta programs but I'd like to ask whether this 2020-003 beta again updates the T2 firmware?

(17P4263 was installed with 2020-002).

Does Apple provide any information about the software parts that receive updates with version 2020-003?

(Esp. SMC, IOThunderboltFamily and Kernel).

A forced Catalina Upgrade really would be very unsatisfactory. Also, it seems that not only Apple hardware which contains the T2 Security Chip is affected, but certain MacBooks and iMac models apparently received Boot ROM updates and also ran into problems since then.

It would be a shame if Apple would not fix the problems they introduced for quite a lot of users by one somewhat careless software update.

Thank you very much for the information, let's hope for a rescuing final release.

I don't use any external devices except display and keyboard&month, this issue has a high frequency and has occurred 8 times in the last week.

After reading this whole topic, i just want to say, disable Safari seems could not resolve this issue, because I always use Chrome instead of Safari.

The panic historic on my side,
