Mac Mini 2018 Kernel panic bug_type 210 after Security Update 2020-002

Hello everyone,

since installing the Mojave Security Update 2020-002 I do get a message that my Mac Mini 2018 was restarted because of a problem even I shut it down normally. The Mac Mini 2018 was running fine for 3 months. The Apple Hardware Check does not show any errors. Also tried to reset SMC and PRAM.

Is this a known bug? Just curios wether Mac mini 2018 users who also installed Apple's Security Update 2020-002 do see the same error message?

Found a Fix for my specific issue ! (Short History and answer below)

I have had this Panic Message upon Start-Up since last February after installing the Security Update & Safare on my Late 2018 Mac Mini using the original Mojave (which I want to keep for my 32bit programs). Too many hours and days with Apple Techs on the phone trouble shooting, and upgrading to Catalina from Mojave. Upon their request I took my 2018 Mini (w/ 128SSD, 8gb, i3) to the Apple Store 14 days ago and left it for a week. They found nothing wrong, but reinstalled Mojave. Still NO Fix !

My specific problem seems to be related to my older USB Mac Keyboard with a Wireless (USB Receiver type) Mouse. I really liked my old extended keyboard, but after getting a New Bluetooth Keyboard and Bluetooth Mouse ... My problem seems to be solved, so far !!!

Hope this helps one of you ...

> Can I get a LINK to an original / older version of Mojave OS10.14 that DOES NOT have the "Security Update 2020-002" to use on my 2018 Mac Mini.

That does not fix the problem. Even cleanly installing the macOS 10.14 March 2020 version that did not have the "Security Update 2020-002" did not help (I tried it then) because the problem seems to be the Firmware that it updated. And mere mortals can not downgrade Firmware. There have been about six later Firmware updates but none have yet fixed this sleep/shutdown-cold boot error.

Here is an interesting observation. I didn't have kernel panic issue for many weeks (mac mini with Mojave is in daily use with Chrome open all the time). I opened Safari today for the first time in many weeks as one site had issues on Chrome and left it open accidentally as I went to lunch. I cam back and BAM! - restart from kernel panic. I am starting to agree with those who say this is Safari related...

You're on to something!

I am testing your theory. We've now established that opening Safari is the problem. I shut down Safari and still had the issue re-occur.

I've now reset SMC (just shutting down, unplugging and waiting 15 seconds to plug in and another 5 seconds before turning on). Let's see how long I go on without a kernel panic! Timer starts now! fingers crossed....

Attention Tom & Others,

I am so grateful for your help with this Panic Message crap ! Also, many thanks to all of you, as I'm finally pleased with your solution below for my 2018 Mini. After 8-10 months of dealing with the Genius Bar and Apple Support Techs. on the phone I had NO (0) fix until now.

Wondering if I should now do the latest Mojave updates ( Security Update 2020-006 10.14.6 & Safari 14.0.1 ) on my 2018 Mini and my 2012 MacBook Pro ? I 'm a bit gun shy , to say the least, due to the past Security Update that started this problem.

My Sincere Thanks, Chris B

Hi,

I confirm that starting from external drive (I used a simple usb key, more than 12Gb) ad accepting the message not really clear to update you get your normal startup disk untouched and the firmware updated.

I also used the Security Update 2020-006 10.14.6 & Safari 14.0.1, but I think this is not the fix.

What truly solved the problem is the update of the firmware version.

I hope Apple will release this update of the firmware together with future Security update for Mojave, but I don't know; I also hope Apple will not create such troubles in the future, but who knows...
