No VDCAssistant found

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro, after updating to Catalina, I can't use the camera for any app. After going through the community posts and trying the resolutions, the camera is still showing as unavailable.

I used the 'sudo killall VDCAssistant" command in the terminal and a "no matching processes were found" was returned.

How can I resolve a missing VDC Assistant issue?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, actually it started coming up after i have installed Zoom for videocalling. After two or three times that it worked, suddenly "no camera found". Same problem with vdcassistant and also "no issues found" in diagnostic.

Anyone who can help?

Hi,

Then what about resetting NVRAM as well as SMC which could solve the issue

Or boot in Safe mode, then normal boot which could solve the problem.

If they don't help, you should contact Apple support or opened Apple Authorized Service Provider to ask about the camera issue.

I have the same issue. Updating to Catalina 10.15.5 was supposed to potentially help (see the software update package contents) but no luck. I tried Apple chat support yesterday and no one could give me any idea beyond reinstalling Catalina. I'm pretty frustrated since my computer is in great shape otherwise. Going in is not possible right now with Covid and protesting. Sigh.

I have the same issue. The System Report, found via "About This Mac" says "no video capture devices found" under Camera. I'm running 10.15.5, I've uninstalled Zoom, and I've done "sudo killall..." in Terminal and tried to quit VDCAssistant in Activity Monitor. ***?

btw- I had to find VDCAssistant. At first it was in Disk and Network tabs. Then after "quitting" they are showing up in all the tabs except Energy. The User name is "_cmiodalassist". Is that okay?

(and I don't understand the above post with the links. Is that working for anyone?)

Hi,

I had tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC on more than one occasion but this did not solve the problem. I also tried SAFE mode and interestingly found that the computer could not detect the inbuilt iSight camera despite it being detected when booting normally (camera information is shown under system information).

Running apple diagnostics came up with an error code NDC001meaning there is a hardware issue with the camera. I'm hoping it's something like a loose cable.

Hi all,

I have an update; the MacBook Pro computer I had issues with was sent into an Apple repair centre and they decided to replace the whole screen at no charge. The computer was outside its three year warranty and I believe this issue was treated as a manufacturers defect. Good luck to all who still have this issue.

Everyone having this issue, I just figured out a workaround that worked for me on mb pro running Catalina. After reading all of your posts I ran the diagnostics and there were no hardware issues, so if you have not, confirm that first. If there are no hardware issues, try setting up a new second/guest account with either standard or administrator access. Once done, try logging out of original user account and log into newly created account. If you get lucky like me, camera started working again for FaceTime and Webex (trying to avoid Zoom app) on the NEW user account. Seems to be something software bug related.

Apple Support had me try most of the above then booked me into the Apple store to have the camera lead connection checked. I questioned how it could have come dislodged as the laptop hadn't been moved or touched since the previous day when the camera was working which is why I kept searching for a solution. The issue for me was that most of the suggested fixes using Terminal specified VDC Assistant & it was only when I worked out there was no VDC Assistant in Mojave and Catalina that I found the solution to specify AppleCameraAssistant instead which immediately fixed it.
