How do I get the mac to recognise the mic which is connected via mini jack. An earlier answer suggested it needed power (. Phantom power but I don’t know what this is. Can anybody help please?
Thanks for your suggestion. It didn’t work but I bought USB stereo sound adapter which worked immediately. I think I should have bought the version of the mic with a usb connector in the first place!

Get a TRRS 4 pole headphone splitter like this one. Connect the single end of the cable to the Mac headphone port (press in firmly) and the mic to the other (should be labeled such).

Choose the Apple Menu > About This Mac
It worked for me. All headphone splitters are not alike, most are not 4 pole. The difference is not obvious since in all other respects they look alike. So that’s probably why yours didn’t work, wasn’t 4 pole. Happy to hear nonetheless, 😉.
It is a Mac mini late 2014 with 8GB of Ram and it is running macOS Catalina 10.15.4
