16" MBP Radeon 5500: High fan noise / GPU(?) usage issue with external HDMI displays

Hi all,

I've observed a problem that I observed on my 16" MacBook Pro since upgrading from a 15" 2019 system - whenever I have an HDMI display plugged in, either mirrored or spanned, the fans spin up an the system gets hot.

It doesn't matter which HDMI display (1080p, 2560x1600) or what adapter I use (ALogic, Apple USB-C to HDMI or a displayport to HDMI at the end of a Thunderbolt chain).  It happens either with lid closed, or with the lid open.

I do NOT see this issue with my LG 5K UltraFine Thunderbolt display.

Any ideas?
