I did NOT click download, was in a forum for automobiles and this was forwarded to this site. I immediately exited out, cleared website data & history. How do I scan to see if it was still downloaded? What's the check report thing called again?

You can’t get malware by visiting a website. macOS isn’t Windows.
It is possible that it could download a file to your Downloads folder, but that file cannot do anything on its own.
As you noted, it is just a scam that is trying to scare you into taking actions that might get you to reveal information or actually install malware. You didn’t do those things.
The site you were on has malware on it that injected JavaScript that displayed that message and fake notification.
