Help Please. MacBook won’t turn on.

Hi All,

Reaching out to those who may be able to offer some advice.

Recently my MacBook Pro is not able to startup.

Initially On switching it on I was presented with a screen showing “white noise” of my background picture.

Switching it off again and restarting the laptop (Shift, Cmd, Ctrl & Power) at best I get to the login screen with User or Guest.

Sometimes doing this it only chimes and shows a black screen.

When I login with my password it shows a “loading progress bar” and unfortunately never completes before what I’d consider to be crashing & tailing the loading process. Occasionally it manages to fill half the bar, other times none at all.

I’ve tried to load with & without the charger in it, waiting 12 hours etc

Anybody have any insight as to what is going on?

Is it just a case that this laptop has had its day?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

All the best

Jk

What is the exact model of your laptop? You can get this information by entering your serial number here or here. What version of macOS are you using?

Try running the Apple Diagnostics.

Try booting into Safe Mode.

It doesn't hurt to try a PRAM reset as well.

Hi

Thank you kindly for the response.

It’s a MacBook Pro 13inch, Mid 2014 and I’m using MacOS Sierra.

I hadn’t seen anything anywhere about a PRAM reset so tried that immediately and that seems to have done the trick.

Is there anything I can do to prolong/protect it from this point on?

Now that it is switched on I’ll be running Mac diagnostics and see what happens....

It is starting to look like you have a hardware failure of some sort. Definitely try the Apple Diagnostics.

Barring a WiFi network issue of some kind (usually you get an error code instead of black screen) I think this laptop will need to be serviced by Apple. To eliminate any possible WiFi issues you could try connecting the laptop directly to the router using an Ethernet cable and a Thunderbolt or USB to Ethernet Adapter (Thunderbolt adapter is preferred).
