File is null

I can't send I movie files to email or save them as files on to the Mac Book Pro. I just get the message 'file is null'.

I can make the movies(all quite short) OK but cannot send them as e mail attachments or save them as files.

How do I get round this 'file is null'?

Take a look at this thread and see if the solution there helps you:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7073179

The solution in the above thread involves creating a new iMovie library and copying your project over to it, then share out from the new library.

Other things you can try:

Delete preferences. To delete preferences, open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears.  iMovie will open in a new library.  Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can share out.

Another thing you can try is to boot up in Safe Mode (see Finder help menu for instructions) and, after everything loads, immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. Sometimes that clears up conflicts.

One more thing: You might be getting the black square with "file is missing" in it because you have not consolidated your project media before transferring the file to the second library. Before transferring, try selecting the project in the project browser view (where your projects are displayed as icons) and do a File/Consolidate Project Media. Then transfer the project and see if that eliminates the "file is missing" issue.

Hello Rich,

Thank you. This has been most helpful. I've had one or two gremlins when I've copied a file and it has come up with black squares and a question mark saying 'file is missing' but I seem to have got it working now.

The trick seems to be, as you say to remember to close down the old library and restart i-movies.

Much appreciated. Now I can share some happy memories of travel when it was still possible to travel!

Thanks again.

Best wishes,

Dominic.
