Internet sharing via usb stopped

Until a few days ago I used to be able to plug in any iPad or iPhone into a usb cable connected to my Mac and it would connect to the internet via Internet Sharing. Under internet sharing I would see options like "iPad USB" and "iPhone USB".

Now I only see iPhone USB but it doesn't actually provide internet. Tried different cables, all used to work. Seems a software issue.

How can I get this back to work?

Your USB-connectivity issue may be caused by an explicit security setting within iOS/iPadOS - intended to protect the iPad/iPhone from attack over its hardware (Lightning/USB) port.

To disable this security feature on iPad/iPhone:

Settings > TouchID/FaceID & Passcode > USB Accessories - set to ON

The default (higher security) setting is OFF; this configuration provides increased protection from hardware exploits.

I hope this is the key to solving your problem.

Whilst is was an idea, it clearly wasn’t the right one for your issue. I’m stumped.

At this point, I can only suggest that in addition to posting your question here, that you either repost your question to the Mac Communities within ASC, or contact the Apple Support Team for assistance.

One last thing, given that the problem has only recently occurred, have you tried a forced-restart of your iPad and Mac?

To force-restart your iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Thanks, yes I've tried this as well. Still no luck.

As an iOS developer, I've been using device internet sharing for some years for rapid communications with my dev server application environment on my MBP. This problem happened suddenly when I upgraded from Mojave to the latest version of Catalina. From other reports, apparently it was working in the previous minor version of Catalina.

The iPad can communicate fine in all other contexts (e.g. building to the device from XCode).

For now I've posted a bug report.

Thanks again!
