Error connecting to apple id server

I need to instal an update on my macbook pro. It asks me for my apple ID and password. I type it in and it says 'there was an error connecting to your apple id server'. I have changed my password on all of my devices. I have good WIFI. I have updated date and time. I can sign in to icloud.com. My apple id is working for my itunes on my computer and for my apps on my phone but I get the error message when trying to instal and update that is desperately needed.

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.
