Red dot showing in the software update icon but already updated to Catalina 10.15.4

I am a new Mac user and followed the direction to go to finder and press shift control G and type that link in but then I get to 6 folders and don’t know how to delete whatever I am supposed to delete. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Delete this file and restart.

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate.plist

While in the Finder, press "command shift G", paste the above line into the window that opens and press Return. It will highlight the file for deletion.

Rather than typing the line, it would be easier if you just copied the line then paste it in.

Hey there. Tried all the steps (very careful to follow the instructions). Deleted the file and trashed it. Emptied the bin and still a dot! That dot haunts me! I also have a dot on the AppleID icon. Checked it as well, and cannot figure out what is going on! Ah!

Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate.plist

While you are in the Finder, press Command Shift G, then copy & paste the line I posted into the window that opens. Hit return. Move the file to the Trash. Empty the Trash.

Because you missed the "~" in "~/Library", perhaps?

Did you also copy the word "Delete"? You're not supposed to.

Thanks, finally found file, deleted, rebooted, checked for updates and red dot went away.
