I have now received a new MacBook Air 2020 but the camera quality is the same. The MacBook Air 2020 has just an incredibly bad camera. I think we are left with 3 options:

  1. Get a different computer
  2. Use your iPhone camera which needs to get connected to the MacBook Air with the help of a supporting App
  3. Buy an external webcam

I have this same problem with my brand new MacBook Air. It's much lower quality than my much much older MacBook Air (I think it's 2011?). I'm pretty upset about this, as I teach online. I doubt if I return it that a new one will be better though, as this seems to be a widespread model issue? Very frustrating as Mac is usually such high quality and I am teaching courses online and this quality is terrible!

Looks like there is a systemic problem at Apple here - and it looks like Apple is ignoring it - which is nuts, given that so many people now need to use the camera.

P.S. Since my comment above from Aug 23, I had a call with Apple support - we spent 1 hour doing restarts and other tricks - and it made no difference. They suggested I 100% wipe my Mac - which is essential for daily work. But, I decided that:

1) given the other comments this would make zero difference.

2) the potential for disruption to my work was too great if something went wrong with the re-install - and which as 1) - may not even help.

I can't believe that when Steve Jobs was running things that such a massive design fault would have been shipped.

Incredibly I've seen similar comments for the new MacBook Pro as well.

Come on Apple - do something - and especially make some kind of public statement about this and what is causing it.

P.S. it's hilarious that an earlier complaint by someone is now marked as 'Solved' - when there is actually no solution there at all. Really not good customer service at all when a company mis-labels that a consumer complaint has been solved when it hasn't.

This is a common problem and have read it is also a problem with MacBook Pro. This should be unacceptable not only to customers like us that have purchased these products but should be unacceptable to Apple. Has anyone received a response from Apple that indicates they will do something about this. I am ready to return my new MacBook Air and go back to my older version that had a battery problem.

Thanks for letting me know! I got really excited as I read your reply. I turned on my computer ready to update it to the latest ios only to realize I already have version 10.15.7 It’s a brand new laptop (just over two weeks old) so I must have updated it when I initially set it up. Unfortunately I still have the blurry camera issue even with the newest version.

Too True. I am teaching in a school of education. Student teachers are learning to teach online. My research is engagement in learning. If the school child can’t see the face of the trainee teacher on their new Apple MacBook Air - the child switches off their camera

The situation will be the same for any university student.

This product is a disaster for Apple.

How is this just the way it is?!

Apple has a quality production problem. A MacBook Air is not cheap! I can't believe that Apple is following this thread without a fix or recommendation for its customers.

After 20 years of being an Apple customer, I convinced my father to get an MBA. He can't wait to return it due to the camera issue. I will post on social media to see if anyone else has had better luck getting a response from Apple.

Having similar problems with barely out of the box, brand new 2020 13" Mac Book Air. Image in zoom us awful, so grainy, that it looks like a Seurat painting, and not in a good way.

APPLE - please fix this in Covid-19 Days we are all teleworking on zoom for work. You likely have sold more laptops because4 of the pandemic

My old 2015 Mac Book Air camera has far crisper and clearer image in the camera.

Please consider this an official complaint. Many of us are in this situation now, please get a fix out asap.

Thanks very much.

Agreed! Our MacBook Air camera in the 2018 version was honestly really good! We bought the 2020 for my work, I logged into zoom today and literally thought I bought a failed device until I googled this thread! So grainy I thought I did something to the view ... So unfortunate. I was going to call customer care tomorrow and now I see it is a waste of time. I am honestly shocked! unacceptable for $1k

Yes This is truly awful to find out. Mine didn’t work even with professional lighting rig. Just think how many students bought theses useless computers. I thought the latest Air had been upgraded.

I specialise in online teaching techniques on my website mhmvr and ended up using an old Sony PMW 500 with a wide angle lens plugged injust for the Zoom sessions and got another computer because there are not enough ports for hard drives etc for creating teaching videos and handling email.

Times are bad enough teaching online with Apple making it worse.

I am a first, and at this point, last time Macbook user. I purchased the air this year Feb/March 2020. Initially I didnt use it for video/ft but now that I need to use it more I am COMPLETELY dissatisfied with camera, its blurry and dark. I tried cleaning it and all that and still no change. With the cost of the computer and all the great things Apple promises I expected better honestly. The cameras better on the iphone and my grandsons cheap little android tablet. Then Apple does a huge update and still a sucky camera. With the pandemic I use my computer ft a lot more and honestly I probably would have done better with a pc.
