keynote audio- error message cannot use built in audio

I am trying to record audio narration for a keynote presentation. When I hit the record button, the application freezes and gives me a pop-up error : Cannot use Built-in Audio. I've checked all security and microphone settings I can think of. Can anyone help?

Check you have set the following:

go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sound > Input tab > select the microphone you will use
move the input volume slider the left to about 70%
speak into the mic and check the level indicator is moving
close preferences window
