Apple Watch Offline Spotify Music

Hi,

I am looking at buying the Apple Watch 5 series. I want to use it when I go for runs and not have to take my phone with me. This includes tracking my runs and listening to music. I have Spotify Premium - is there a way to listen to songs on the Apple Watch 5 GPS only whilst on my run. Can I download my Spotify playlists to the watch.

I just got the Apple watch specifically with the hopes that I can work out and listen to Spotify without my phone. I didn't realize this was not an option and am so disappointed I am considering returning the watch. Ugh.

You seem to be a ambulatory person... As you know Apple is using closed platform. Take e.g. Samsung’s Tizen, offers offline playlist. So I will say the question is why, not how. I’m not accusing them for blocking the streaming, they simply just don’t allow it. I guess their answer could be something like this: Due to GDPR and Cyber Security blablabla. I’m sure it will be available eventually, but we are on S5 now. They can at least offer offline playlists. Streaming consumes more battery, thus I’m happy with offline.

Hehe, me neither.... Just frustrated over the delay. Perhaps it’s Spotify to blame, and not Apple. Then again I suspect that that Apple will take their time before they approve the application. Spotify is for sure the biggest competitor to AM. Why open the door before you need to...

This is my take on this, maybe the application is already sent a couple of years back...

Anyways, cheers, have a good one.

Spotify has been fighting since 2016 for Apple Watch streaming functionality. Since Apple owns the App Store, they kept implementing terms that limited their competitors like Spotify. See Spotify's timeline with Apple here: https://www.timetoplayfair.com/timeline/

As of June 16, Apple is finally under investigation for violating competition rules. Let's hope after this investigation that Spotify users can finally directly stream music from their watches.

It's ironic that you critique the link for being partial to Spotify because every response I have seen you provide, within this thread, has unabashedly leaned in favor of Apple. Why would it make sense for Spotify to delay providing the app to Apple? That would incentivize Apple Watch users to transition over to Apple Music so that they could have the functionality mentioned in the original question. It makes much more sense for Apple to block entry to direct competitors to give Apple Music an Apple Watch monopoly of sorts.

Your Pandora point is moot. Pandora, Apple Music, and Spotify do not compete for the same demographic of customers. Users aged 55+ make up 22% of Pandora's user-base, whereas that same demographic makes up just 11% of Spotify's. Also the age demographic of 18-24 (the customers that AM and Spotify are after) makes up just 11% of Pandora's user-base, but for Spotify it makes up a whopping 26% of their user-base.

Even if you have cellular, you can’t play it offline 😰 you can only play Apple Music offline even with cellular. I was disappointed because I, like you, have most of my music on Spotify. My only saving grace was that my parents have Apple Music and we’re on a family plan. So if want to do that, you can download some of your workout playlists on Apple Music and then play it with or without data

You can play music from sources beside Apple.

Pandora paid users can Stream, and transfer off-line playlists to the Apple Watch.

If you have your own music files on your iPhone, you can transfer that to the Apple Watch.

If you have some other music service that allows off-line playlists, you can most likely transfer them to the Apple Watch.

Spotify is not the only game in town.

Unfortunately your in no luck,

The choice is very simple:

You want a work-out watch : Garmin/Fitbit or any other that support spotify premium users/offline music that you paid.

If you prefer just the fun of the apple stuff without the work out portion... stay with your apple watch :) but even then its not easy for music :)

Now you will say: what if I pay itune officially.. well they even made it difficult for you to do that ... imagine after paying and paying still its not easy.

Look, you want a simple watch that is more precise for GPS and that allow you to use your "spotify premium that your already paying" my answer: Garmin forerunner 245, if your ready to pay as much as apple price then look for the super powerful garmin fenix series, you'll see, you'll get 1000% more and better precision if your goal is strictly work-out intelligent watch.

Again if your goal is to keep your apple Goodies keep your apple watch but for a real workout watch that doesn't block you because they offer them self a music paying service, get another watch... you'll feel better immediately :)

Thats my honest opinion after having purchased many iphones, 2 apple watches, even got an apple computer... and trying an itune subscription and still no luck... forget it its no win situation ... unless you want to open your windows and continue throwing money... someday they will make it easier but only for iTunes subscribers :)

Good Luck but trust me better to invest a 300-500$ CAD (or less in USD) and immediately get what you want.

bye bye Apple

At present, you are only allowed to play Spotify music on Apple Watch. If you want to play Spotify music on Apple Watch without iPhone, you may need to download Spotify music to your Apple Watch. To download Spotify music to your Apple Watch, you need the help of Spotify music converter. With it, you can download Spotify music to MP3 then transfer Spotify music tracks to Apple Watch for playing even without an Internet connection.

Doesn't look this is happening anytime soon. I love Apple, but I think a 30% cut from Spotify is a bit greedy and unfair. In fact, I returned my Apple Watch because I can't stream Spotify (without the phone) and I'm sure I'm not the only one, so I'm not sure this is working out for Apple. I mean it probably is, but I'd definitely by an Apple watch if they took a more reasonable cut from Spotify. I know how capitalism works, but I don't want Amazon or Apple to slowly kill every other smaller business out there.
