Do you want to allow this page to open “News”? NO! I DO NOT!

Following the latest IOS update to my iMAC last night I am now greeted with "Do you want to allow this page to open “News”?" every time I go to CNN.com using Safari - which unfortunately is my home page so it happens constantly. It also happens when CNN.com refreshes automatically from time to time. Not only is this prompt unbelievably annoying, but if I click "Allow" (instead of "Cancel") it opens the News app and a popup says "This content is not not available in Apple News"! So it's annoying..... AND a Fail.

HOW for the love of all things sacred can I stop this invasive prompt? I've looked everywhere.

SOLVED!

I spoke to Apple Support and we tried many things including Safe Mode, setting up a new user (which did not suffer from the same affliction) and adjusting preferences.

Here is what worked - Clear your Safari browsing history. That's it! Apple was stumped but it was one of the things they suggested and it worked. Something was stuck in there...

I do not have a NEWS+ subscription either, but I MIGHT have figured this out. The dialog has not shown up since I did this, but since I'm not sure when it shows up this is hardly a definitive test.

Open System Preferences

Click on Apple ID in the upper right (next to family sharing)

In the "apps on this mac are using iCloud" scroll down to News and UNcheck it (I don't know how it got turned on to begin with). I answered the dialog that will pop up asking if you want to save or delete the News content on your Mac, I selected delete. Once that was done the "do you want to allow this page to open "news.app" ?" has not appeared when I go to CNN. But again maybe I just have not waited long enough.
