Apple Watch Series 2 Update to 6.2 issues. iPhone X on version 13.4.1

I have followed all the steps posted on Apple site and YouTube to get this update to take. Apple watch is charged to 100% and connected to charger. iPhone is also charged to 100%, connected to charger and connected to Wi-Fi . I have rebooted both devices a few times. I have removed the update download on the iPhone. (iPhone - Watch app > General > Usage > Software Update >) Deleted that file there. Then went to (iPhone - Aatch app > General > Software Update) It sees update 6.2 and download it again. But fails to install. Get message "Unable to Install Update - An Error occurred installing the latest version of watchOS on your Apple Watch." from my iPhone I then went into (iPhone - Watch app > General > Diagnostic Logs) and deleted all the old logs. I have even tried installing the new update from the watch itself (Settings > General > Software Update) and get the exact same message. I also have seen a error saying it cannot talk to the watch, but I can see the watch in my Bluetooth device on the iPhone and it is connected. I can change the face style on the Watch and the watch get the new face instantly. I have reset the watch and tried to set it up as a new device as well as restore from backup. Still fails to take this new update.

So then I went into the Watch itself and turned off the Wi-Fi (Settings > Wi-Fi > OFF)s and all of a sudden my Watch finally updated.

Short version...make sure your watch is connected to WiFi with a proper password!!

I too had this problem, "Unable to update software", so I followed the the pointers above about turning off WiFi. Then I reached a point where a message said in order to resume downloading to the watch, connect to WiFi. I turned WiFi back on for both devices.

Then it dawned on me as I was trying to to connect the watch to WiFi once again, I had recently made a password change to my WiFi. I hadn't realized that the watch needed to be updated as well. Once I re-connected to the WiFi with a proper password, all worked as expected. By the way, when connecting your watch to your WiFi and it needs an updated password, you will get a message on your phone asking to share its password. Makes it super easy!

I had been using my watch for well over a week before attempting this software update. Apparently, it can still operate just fine without a WiFi connection and there are no messages alerting to the fact that the watch couldn't re-connect to WiFi...at least none that I saw.

Hope this helps someone else out there!!

SAME!!! I’d been trying to update for weeks, so glad I found this solution. I had to turn off WiFi on my watch, then go into the upgrade screen on the watch and open the upgrade screen on my phone. I had to keep pressing the update button on the watch, the iPhone update screen kept flickering as did the update screen on the watch, and then it finally caught on the phone and started updating!!! YES!!!! Turning off WIFI and making sure the watch is connected via Bluetooth and on the charger is definitely the fix!!!

I tried switching WiFi off, but as soon as I placed it on the charger it restarted. This was after several attempts to update the watch. I can report that I repeated the process of starting the update from the watch with my wife's Apple Watch, and that worked as well. I think our friends at Apple need to do better testing on these updates before rolling them out.

shepj999, I am glad you got your update to finally take. It would be interesting to see if someone else who is struggling to get the update to take. Would just turn the WiFi off for a a several seconds and back on and see if it goes. Could be just by turning watch WiFi off and back on rather than Watch WiFi off ends up being a solution for them...

To others struggling this post is not a catch all solution and never claimed to be. This is however just another step to try to get the watch to take the update...

Just like the Apple logo. Keep taking a bite out of by trying new steps. We will get there together and it’s going to be sweet.

Finally got it to load after 14 attempts with various combinations. This sequence worked for me - Reset , unpaired, and re-paired the watch, loaded from watch-fail, loaded from phone-fail, loaded From phone -success. Again looks like time to plan to buy a new watch / 8 days of fiddling around with watch upgrades is a real deterrent from continued use. Not the brand experience I’ve come to expect from Apple. Had the same sort of retry upgrade on my wife’s watch.

My own iphone xs is running 13.5.

AW is currently running 5.3.6

Another iphone 6 i tried to pair, runs iOs 12.

By factory reset mode i mean that AW is like it comes from factory. So it is totally erased and empty.

if try to pair it with ip xs, it starts project normally. Watch app says in the beginning that you must have latest software in our AW to pair, want to update now? Other optionn is to cancel pairing. If i try to update it starts updating, but after downloading it gives error: could not finnish update, your telephone is not connected to internet.

when i pair it with ip 6, it goes well, because there is option: continue pairing without update. After pairing everything works. Watch app offers update to 5.3.7. (I suppose that is latest watch os that supports ios12). When i start updating to that, it is same story: could not update, telephone not connected to internet. Tried to shut off wifi from AW when updating, no help. So it doest not help that AW is working with ip6, because i want it to work with my xs.

can not update from AW settings, since watch os 5 does not have that option.
