Horizontal Black and Blue lines

During the last week, my 2017 Mac Book Pro 13" Display started showing black lines over the top bar. The situation got worse day by day: now they cover 1/3 of the screen and there is also a thick blue line with light-blue lines around it.

If the computer rests for the night, it will be ok in the morning, but only for about 1h. of use, then the lines gradually make a comeback.

This occured out of nowhere, the computer is always on my desk and there is no visible damage. I have no warranty left, but it would be crazy if I a €2,500 computer isn't even able to last for 2 years!

Has this happened to anyone else & how did they solved it?

Is there any hope of demonstrating that this is a design / product flaw and should be fixed for free? I also can't physically go to an Apple store because of the COVID19 lockdown in Italy & I absolutely need my laptop to work.

Hello alice-corona,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're seeing black and blue horizontal lines on your display and I'm happy to help you resolve this.

Let's start by resetting PRAM/NVRAM.

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

Additionally, you may consider booting your Mac to Internet Recovery (Shift-Option-Command-R: Mac startup key combinations) to ensure that there's not a software component to these aberrant lines. Internet Recovery downloads a clean version of the installer each time, so, if you're still seeing lines on your display in Internet Recovery, you'll want to Contact Apple Support.

Best regards.

I have tried these things unsuccesfully. I have also ran the Hardware test, which didn't find any issues.

If it helps with the diagnostic: the laptop works fine for a few hours after a full night of rest; then lines start out black/gray. Then they turn blue after about 2 hours of use. Finally, after about another 2h. of use they become pinkish/red + they gradually fill a bigger portion of the screen.

Making it rest for a bit makes the situation better, but I need it for work so it can't really rest for more than 30 min in a row during work hours. I have bought an external monitor/keyboar/mouse and hope it ships soon so that I can work and have the Mac screen rest, but I would really like to solve the issue..
