MacOS 10.15 Catalina and Blue Yeti?

MacOS 10.15 Catalina / MacBook Pro 13" 2018 recognizes my classic Blue Yeti, plays audio back through the headphone jack flawlessly, but doesn't hear any sound from the microphone.

Strangely, I have the same problem with a classic Logitech H800 headset. Audio out works flawlessly but the microphone is silent.

As far as I can tell, the Input | Output settings on Preferences | Sound are correct.

Any ideas?

In my case it was also the Catalina upgrade when the mic stopped working.

the solutions proposed above have worked for me though.

  1. get a powered usb hub.
  2. plug the mic into the powered usb hub and then into the Mac
  3. go to the settings In the AUDIO midi panel in the utilities folder and check that the mic is not set to mute and the gain is up.

the combination of those things and fixed the mic for me.

it appears to be a combined software and hardware issue. The software update to Catalina did something to the midi settings and for some reason the power to the ports was also affected.

following the above steps seems to resolve it fully.

There's another recent topic where a user with the same Mini as I have couldn't get the Yeti working right. As a last resort, I suggested using a powered USB hub as I have my Yeti connected to. As soon as she did that, the problems went away. So it appears the Mac isn't providing enough power to the mic on its own.

Check the settings in Audio MIDI Setup in the Utilities folder.

this solved it for me on Catalina 10.15.5

my Blue Yeti Pro has been working great in Zoom and then yesterday it stopped working. the system detected the microphone and I could hear the monitor sound via the 3.5mm output on the bottom of the mic but there would be no audio levels in the system setting or in zoom.

after I checked the Audio MIDI settings I noticed that the Master Level for the Blue Mic was at .50. I raised it all the way to its max, 1.0 and it worked again! I messed around with the slider a bit more and for me, anything below max would essentially mute the mic. so I left it at max and control the gain via the hardware knob on the Yeti Pro.

make sure that you are making these changes in the Input tab, not the Output tab.

thanks!

I have a Blue Yeti Pro on a MacBook Pro 2018 (15"). I have had interesting results. From September last year until just recently, this modest microphone has worked marvelous. Each pattern had strong gain, and crisp sound.

All of a sudden, I seem to have some difficulties. At first, I thought it was the USB port I connected it with. I have a CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Plus dock and SIIG dock.

I tried different USB ports and I would get this nasty distortion and interfering noise. I tried different patterns, and I got ugly results.

Supposedly, the SIIG has a USB 2 port, so I tried this port. For a time, this port worked. However, it has not been so reliable lately.

Some say that there is a power issue for the USB 2 device between the Mac and the Blue Yeti.

I plan on testing this microphone against some other capture devices like MOTU and Zoom H6. Maybe, these will adequately power my Blue Yeti Pro properly. Also, I think that I can test my Yeti against a Mac mini 2014. This may yield different results.

Hi Dan,

Have you changed to Catalina?

My Blue Yeti Pro started leaving distortions and sound shadow, when I changed to Catalina.

I have dealt with Blue Yeti support and they have not been able to fix it and just stop responding in the end.

There are a couple of other treads talking about same issue and in a similar manner, Blue Yeti pro have stopped responding.

I fixed it by buying a RODE microphone and it has not missed a beat

Hi there!

Have you managed to solve your problem?

I have the same issue.

Yeti pro will work on older macbook air with previous IOS but it wont work on the latest Catalina IOS on a newer macbook air.

The Blue microphones support sent us the drivers... for Windows knowing we use macs.

Super frustrating. Especially that I love the sound quality of the mic.

Provided that it works...

I have been dealing with Blue Microphones, and one customer service agent (N), told me there was no problem.

When contacting another Customer service agent (C), she looked into the issue and could see there is a problem. She tried actively to solve the problem , however she could not get any of them to work.

When I am asking for an update now, they simply do not answer my emails.

Having tried to raise the issue again, I get no answer, very disappointing to see a professional company that otherwise seem to have a professional product, choosing such a low level of customer service.

Thank you very much for your reply, Kurt.

I have tested the Mic using Mojave and it works fine, however as soon as I change to Catalina there are sounds "Shadows" through out the recording. - As it was done on the same computer it presumably exclude any power issues and the software is the common denominator. I have upgraded to a new Mac 16, which will not run Mojave and as such the Blue Yeti Pro is useless, unfortunately.

Thank you again for your reply.
