MacOS 10.15 Catalina and Blue Yeti?

MacOS 10.15 Catalina / MacBook Pro 13" 2018 recognizes my classic Blue Yeti, plays audio back through the headphone jack flawlessly, but doesn't hear any sound from the microphone.

Strangely, I have the same problem with a classic Logitech H800 headset. Audio out works flawlessly but the microphone is silent.

As far as I can tell, the Input | Output settings on Preferences | Sound are correct.

Any ideas?

In my case it was also the Catalina upgrade when the mic stopped working.

the solutions proposed above have worked for me though.

  1. get a powered usb hub.
  2. plug the mic into the powered usb hub and then into the Mac
  3. go to the settings In the AUDIO midi panel in the utilities folder and check that the mic is not set to mute and the gain is up.

the combination of those things and fixed the mic for me.

it appears to be a combined software and hardware issue. The software update to Catalina did something to the midi settings and for some reason the power to the ports was also affected.

following the above steps seems to resolve it fully.

ah. we do have another Yeti Pro at the office that had the same symptoms. System would recognize it but no sound would register in any of the apps. it is weird that the microphone would work in Zoom for you but not in any other apps. Although I have noticed that Zoom's audio setting seem to behave independently from the system settings to some degree. for example, I can have Mic and Speaker mapped to the Yeti Pro in Zoom and still have system sounds playing on my iMac. I'll check the other mic at the office and see if I can get it working and report back.

Hi Carsten,

I might be investing in a RODE microphone, soon. I might also be investing in a Zoom audio interface for home use.

I just tried a different USB cable with my Blue Yeti Pro. It doesn't deliver sound via the USB. But, the audio coming off of the line out sounds garbled.

I hope to visit a place today that has a phantom power audio interface. I can test if it is merely the microphone itself or something else.

Good idea on the cable.

Hi Stephen,

I would have thought the docking station (Cal Digit TS3 Plus) would have been power enough. It powers my MBP and charges my iOS devices.

Well, I have at another location a powered USB bus that I can test this with.

Does the Blue Yeti Pro also support power over XLR (aka phantom power)? It would be helpful if all I had to do was acquire a good quality audio interface.

Hi Carsten,

I hope I don't have to upgrade, but fear it may be inevitable.

The poor thing worked great under macOS 10.15.0-10.15.5. It started misbehaving in 10.15.6.

I tested it with just USB. Then I tested it with USB power plus an 1/8th in auxiliary cable to my Thunderbolt 3 Cal Digit TS3 Plus' line in port. In both cases, I get this high pitched hissing sound. It sounds like a ham radio with too high of gain on the microphone. Like as if an external noise source is just coming a long for the ride.

RODE and Shure make good microphones. I am curious if this microphone starts to work over phantom powered XLR. That could save me a bit of money. I hope it wasn't some jerk on the USB cable or something. But, phantom power over XLR would bypass that problem wouldn't it?

I should note that other microphones on the same machine are behaving well. Even the Logitech USB headset and the built in microphone on the MBP produced good quality. So, do you have any ideas?

I had a similiar issue and was able to get the Blue Yeti mic with help from Blue Design support. I am running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.6 / MacBook Pro

Let's try a NVRAM reset. Shut your system down and follow the directions below.

1) Press the power button on your Mac and then immediately press and hold the following keys:

option + command + P + R

The NVRAM reset can be sensitive, so make sure you press the keys simultaneously and don’t release until you hear your computer chime twice, or the Apple logo shows up.

2) After you hear the second chime and/or the Apple logo shows up, release the keys and your computer will startup like normal.

3) Once your Mac has powered up and loaded, reboot the machine once more.

4) View the device your Mac’s System Information

a. Click the Apple icon, then hold the option key and click System Information…

b. Under Hardware, select USB

c. Locate and view the status of the Blue microphone
